Hello, I have a 2004 E320 and recently had the transmission rebuilt and the column shifter replaced at a transmission shop. I recently noticed that the radio will randomly mute, it sounds like the speakers make a spark noise when it happens and then it’ll continue to work normally. The unit itself appears to freeze when this happens because I’ve tried changing stations or inputs to AUX and it won’t change. The display doesn’t turn off or anything aside from it appearing to freeze when changing inputs. I’ve seen other threads but not sure it’s the same issue. Could it be a ground wire or something that could have been related to the work done on my car by the transmission shop?
Update: It appears to be updating the navigation which is what’s causing the audio to freeze, any ideas how to fix this issue?

I had a similar situation where I had work done the car and then when I got it back, the radio did not work. Turns out the fuse to the AGW, Audio Gateway was blown. It is located in the trunk, on the driver's side. Not sure if that is what is causing your problem, but it can't hurt to look. You can find a fuse diagram of the trunk fuses printed on a piece of paper in your fusebox located by the driver's side. Basically where the door meets the body, there is a fuse location, and if you look real carefully, there is a piece of paper showing the fuse layout. One side shows the fuses by the door, the other side shows the fuses in the trunk. If the paper is not there, then you can most likely find a diagram online. The AGW fuse is a red or orange 40a fuse.

A few weeks ago I had a problem with the audio gateway after a wheel alignment. Radio displayed the MB logo, then nothing. I pulled the fuse in the trunk and by the drivers door to reset the audio gateway and head unit. Everything has worked flawlessly since. Random issues sound like a failing module. Have you hooked up a scanner to see if the audio gateway have error codes?
I’ve looked at all my fuses and they all appear to be fine. While I was driving I noticed when I had the maps displayed a message popped up and it was the same time that would cause the audio to stop. It turns out it’s trying to activate navigation, thankfully I caught it on camera because it’s so quick! Now I don’t know what’s up with that? I’ve tried ejecting the navigation disc and reinserted but still does the same issue, any thoughts?
Have you tried a new navigation disc? I suppose it's also possible that the DVD player in the trunk is going bad and having a hard time reading the DVD. Did you also clean the DVD?
