Hi. First post in this forum. Hello all. I’ve just bought my OCD brother’s W211 E3 20 wagon. I say OCD because it has been meticulously cared for I used to have the 2005 E500 from new but since 2009 have been driving smaller Korean cars. My question is that since I have become used to electronic steering and, shall I say, nippier smaller cars, driving this E320 has made me realise how different the drive is (duh). Specifically I’m noticing that the gear changing from low to high gear seems to be laggy. I’ve had the transmission checked out thoroughly and there is nothing wrong with it, however I just noticed that the changes from 2nd to 3rd fourth etc sometimes seem to be late and the revs seem too high when the automatic transmission changes gear I’ve had the transmission checked out thoroughly and there is nothing wrong with it, however I just noticed that the changes from 2nd to 3rd fourth etc sometimes seem to be ‘late’ and the revs seem too high when the automatic transmission changes gear. So I’m not sure if it’s just me getting used to hydraulic steering again but could I have an issue here? FYI all diagnostics are perfect. I have also done the reset transmission memory ‘learning’ trick.

all thoughts most appreciated. 😎👍👍
I would suggest giving the transmission shift adaptation reset a go, i usually use the obd to do this but i believe there may be a manual way of triggering the reset floating around on the forums
Once it's reset, drive the car the way you would normally and it will adapt to your style of driving.
Obviously if u want it to hold higher rpm's before shifting than you will want to floor it
If you want a more passive gear change than drive like a grandma 👍

apologies if I wasn’t clear enough. My last sentence says I’ve tried that. No cigar. . Thank you though
Are you driving in "sport" or "comfort" mode? I notice if I'm heavy on the pedal in sport mode, mine will go close to redline before shifts. A little unnerving because I feel like I'm abusing the car, wrote it off as a "Benz thing". Comfort mode is just no fun though
Is it 4matic or RWD? What are you using to check the codes? If 4matic, I'd say transmission connector, if rwd, conductor plate. But I'd start with making sure the fluid level is correct and maybe changing the fluid/filter.

it’s RWD. All fluids are 100%. Can you explain a little about what you mean about conductor plate? Never heard of this. As you can tell I’m not a mechanic! 😬
E320 so I assume it is from 2003 to 2005 model? If so, this would be the 5 speed transmission? I have the same issue you have. The transmission is just slow to change gears. Not much you can do about it. Personally I think the E320 engine doesn't have enough torque down low and this is why the transmission needs to hold the lower gears longer. In an E500, you can get by with the higher torque and less shifting of the gears. But in the M112 equipped E320, it just doesn't have enough grunt down low.

With the 5 speed, there is the transmission connector that gets coated in transmission fluid which causes strange shifts. I'd change that out if you're having that problem. It will eventually get worse if you don't change it. The 7 speed doesn't have the same issue, but when it does, it's usually the conductor plate. although many indy shops will tell you the transmission is bad and want to replace the entire transmission.
