My manual says...... 1) Drive your vehicle during the first 1000 miles at varying but moderate vehicle and engine speeds.

2) During this period, avoid heavy loads (full throttle driving) and excessive engine speeds ( no more than 2/3 of maximum rpm in each gear.

3) Avoid accelerating by kick-down.

4) Do not attempt to slow the vehicle down by shifting to a lower gear using the selector lever.

5) Select positions 3, 2 or 1 only when driving at moderate speeds (for hill driving).

After 1000 miles you may gradually increase vehicle and engine speeds to the permisible maximum....

What does your owners manual say????? Perhaps you should read it....

basically dont keep your engine revving at one speed, meaning dont put it in cruise for a long time, try to vary your revs, and keep it under 4 rpms, but also, occaisonally push it, also, dont use your shifter, all the stuff that hell, and the manual said. GL

Is it really necessary?

When I bought my second BMW I asked about the break in period and the sales guy told me "those cars are made to be driven, drive the way you intend to drive the car from the very beginning". The salesman I bought my E500 from basically said the same thing.

While I plan to follow the manual's instructions I wonder if it's really necessary and how many owners do it.

My salesman similarly said that I don't need to follow any break-in period rules. 1,300 miles later, no problems (prayer of thanks), though I did baby the car somewhat during this time.

So the sales force is implying is that MB should have balanced the books by cutting printing costs rather than accessories/features?
