Converting to LED without factory HID

Hey All,

I'm looking into upgrading/converting to LED headlights on my 05 E320 CDi W211 without factory HID. The service dept at the local MB dealership implied that the rivers would run with blood if I do it so I started looking here. I've seen a bunch of good threads but most are fairly old so I wanted to ask if anyone can suggest good kits or steer me away from bad ones. Any good information will be appreciated.

LEDs in halogen housing typically isn't recommended. Due to point spread light dispersion, you typically end up with reduced throw distance, light scatter, and dark spots. They can give you better performance compared to fading halogens, but it's by brute force lumen. LEDs are better for indication type lighting (parking lights, sidemarker, etc) or short throw lighting (rear plates, interior, etc). A better solution would be to go with an HID conversion which has 360 light output which your halogen housing can better capture and project forward.

Either way, we have LED and HID solution for you. You'll need a canbus enabled kit to not throw error codes, which all of our products are.

Thanks Michael. Can you supply a link to the appropriate kit for an 05 E320? I think I think I have it but your site doesn't seem to have any information about the product. Also, are there any videos of the install process for that kit?

We offer two different HID conversion kits
Hylux/Morimoto Hybrid HID conversion kit
Morimoto HID conversion kit

Both will work, the main difference is some prefer a Hylux ballast and some prefer a pure Morimoto full kit. Personally, I prefer the Hylux ballast as it has the optional ground wire to help safeguard the kit from power surges.

Ok. Thanks for that. Should I need anything else to install the Hylux/Morimoto hybrid kit or can I just throw it under the hood and shake the car until it all falls into place?

It comes with Velcro tape to attach the ballast to a flat surface in your engine bay, but some prefer 3M red double sided tape or zip ties instead so up to you how you want to mount.

Honestly do what many have done (myself included), get bi-xenon projectors swap out the halogen ones then get HID installed. It will blow away anything else and won’t blind everybody.

it’s about a 3-4/10 difficultly level. More time than anything. Few hours each side.

^ that's the proper way... Retrofitting xenon projectors. We have projectors as well if interested. It is more involved as you'll need to bake open your lens cover. As you have halogen projectors though, you're not blinding anyone like you would be doing with reflectors. The main thing you'd gain would be proper focal point. Either way, an HID conversion would still need to be done so it's not an either or situation. You can do a conversion first, then see if you're content with results. If not, you can continue to step 2 with a projector retrofit.

Are the xenon projectors that different in optics from the halogen ones? This is about three or for items down my to-do list.

Focal point, sharp cutoffs, designed around HID return wire
