E320/2003 Jerking Problem
I own aN E320/2003,have had the same problem,the dealer changed the electronic module with no improvement,they are now changing the TORQUE CONVERTER,hopefully this will fix the problem.

I had the same problem on my 03 E320 and took it to the dealer back in June. The transmission shuddered at very low speeds, whether cold or hot.
On the receipt it shows that they updated the control software. The transmission hasn't shuddered since...I'm knocking on wood.

'03 W211 is the most problematic model year, we both are lucky.....
I had jerking transmission , noisy wipers, sizzling stereo, stuck sun roof, dead side mirror, over-sensitive parktronic, failed gas pump (Twice in 1 year) and even brake failure( the fatalest one) , what a nice car!!!
BTW, I am from Taiwan too but now living in HK.

herky jerky 03 e320
i have brought my car in for at least 5 under warranty fixes since i bought the car used 65000 miles , it is warranted thru 100,000. each time i bring the car in i tell them my trans. jerks at low speeds like parking lot driving very slow hot or cold but not always it jerks bad. never at the dealership and so it shows no code and they tell me everything is fine. i bought this car against my better judgement because of reading the horror stories, but i never had a mercedes. if they don't fix this problem soon it will be my last mb. i hate that because the car looks and drives soooooo good on the hwy..my wife thought i was messing with the brakes when jerking first occored and she didn't believe car was doing this until a few trips later. is there a fix is there a recall or bulletin on it. also car was making a strange noise and it turned out to be high pressure power steering hose leak NOT COVERED UNDER FACTORY 100,000 WARRANTY, HOSE IS 350.00 FOR A HOSE I THINK I'M GETTING HOSED. any help would be appreciated. also previous owner said the only problem he ever had was COMPLETE BRAKE FALIURE. WTF.

I've had this jerking problem from the beginning and Mercedes hasn't been able to do anything about it. I complain about it every time I take my car in. It's really annoying going up these ridiculous multi-story parking structures we have all over Los Angeles. It's a total embarrassment--for Mercedes!!

i have just started getting a similar problem on my 03 CDI diesel. about 70km/h around 1200-1500 rpm and like you said more noticable cold engine conditions..

You'd notice it. Mine is like a yo-yo or pogo stick.
It really feels similar to someone who can't drive a manual transmission and gets that "bucking" action.
The other tranny issue my car has is a weird hesistation if you floor it and have to back off the accelerator - it's as if the car has fuel starvation or something. Nothing happens at all.

The hestitating to accelerate problem appears to have been fixed after replacing all fuel injectors, flushing the entire fuel system, and replacing the crankshaft sensor. When the problem was occuring I experienced two separate episodes of being at a stoplight, trying to accelerate and the car completely dying on me.
Unfortunately the "jerking" problem is still unresolved. Last fall I had the ETC control module replaced, but it did not completely fix the problem. The new module has changed the severity of the jerking - as if it has been somewhat dampened - but it is still definitely there and only on an intermittant basis. I will be taking my car in tomorrow for a schedule D service and will ask MB what else they can do to fix the problem.
I intentionally waited until right before the 2004 model year introduction before buying my vehicle - naively thinking that the first year production bugs would be worked out - obviously that did not happen.
Shame on MB for such a subpar engineering effort.

Have the same problem on my E320 as well. Dad's CL is flawless with the transmission (don't even feel the car upshift).
I went to lunch with a friend of mine and it was her first time seeing my E320. She said her dad had leased one and that it kept having this one problem where when the car was coming to a halt, it would jerk a little. Told her I had the same problem.
Btw, mine also does it when driving very slow in places like parking lots. It jerks back and forth.
Maybe we should all sign something that if we can get enough signatures and send it those geniuses at MBUSA, they'll have to come out with a recall campaign for it, just throwing that idea out there.

I had the same problem with my 03 E320 and finally the transmission electrohydraulic control unit had to be replaced. Glad that I was able to complain until MB agreed to offer a goodwill warranty.
My advice: go to another dealer and insist (you guys are lucky in US. In Hong Kong we have no choice: there is only one exclusive distributor of MB).

I visited my service department to discuss what else could be done to address the intermittent jerking problem I have had. The service manager essentially said that they have tried everything that they know of. When I challenged that statement and mentioned that some people have had torque converters replaced he said that they could look at my vehicle further, but that it would be on my dime. Needless to say that did not go over very well with me. Time to write another letter to MBUSA and explain that this kind of attitude is not going to get them repeat business.

when i brought the car into the dealer, they told me that they will replace the transmission module or something like that. after they replaced it, the car seems to be fine. the jerking only occur whenever i turn on the car for the first time during a day and started driving right away.
after 1month, the jerking is back. and what do you think i should do ? tell the dealership to change another transmission module?

It may be the Torque Converter Clutch. Mention DTB P-B-27.20/78 AUG06 if you want a copy to present to the dealer PM your email address. Using SDS (Star Diagnosis) they will identify if it is the clutch, check for glycerol contamination in the transmission fluid, and flush the transmission fluid. No cost under warranty, out of warranty negotiate a goodwill repair since they may have previously misdiagnosed repair if it is found to be the clutch.

Im not sure if this is the same problem or not that was occurring in the e55's, but if the problem continues and you bought the car new, you have recourse in the lemon law. MB wont buy it back without a fight, but the reality is this causes an unsafe feeling when driving the vehicle, and forces you to drive differently... Your best bet is to let the selling dealer know of your continued issues, and that it cannot continue..If they are unresponsive and you let them know you would like MB corporate involved, then you go lemon.
