Unhappy 2008 E350 Steering Knocking Sound

Hey everyone,

After a brief search of this forum, I was unable to find my answer.
My E350 is making a knocking sound when I move the steering wheel from left to right.
From my stethoscope, it sounds like one likely culprit is the steering pump.
The steering fluid, however, is full. So not low there. I've also had the complete steering rack replaced...wife went on a bit of an ice rampage.

The other symptoms, however, make me want to ask the question...
The engine makes a bit of a shutter or vibration. My engine also burns thru quite a bit of oil in between the oil changes.
based on other threads, the oil burning might be a mercedes thing, but its kindof odd a tuned engine would burn any oil.

Anyways, thoughts on the diagnosis for a Knocking sound when the steering wheel is moving left to right as well as at the full limit?

Is the car on the ground when moving steering wheel left to right? Engine on or off? With front wheels off the ground, engine off, and steering wheel moved left to right - knock sound is normal as compensator is not pressurized.

Car is running on the ground while I move the steering wheel left to right and back again. It's definitely not a whine. More of a clattering. So now I'm thinking it's possibly not the steering pump. Steering works fine as well, so other than the noise and burning oil there are no noticeable symptoms. Front suspension is brand new, steering rack is newish.
