Question E class handling

I've written some time ago about the test conducted by german Auto Motor und Sport (E 270 CDI v Audi A6 2.5 TDI v BMW 525d).
Well I've picked up the article again and after reading the slalom data I've seen something quite spectacular I decided to share with you.
They have done slalom test and sudden lane change test (so called Elk test in which A class rolled over several years ago) with unloaded and loaded cars. I am not sure what the weight difference was, but look at this:

Slalom 18m (empty/loaded) max km/h:

Audi 60.6 / 59.0
BMW 59.8 / 57.7
MB 58.9 / 60.1

"Elk test":

Audi 117.9 / 114.8
BMW 119.6 / 113.1
MB 116.1 / 120.4

MB is the slowest when empty, but is the fastest when loaded and not just the fastest when compared with other cars loaded too, but is the fastest (almost equal in slalom) when other cars are empty and it's loaded!!! Can anyone explain this phenomena?

Talking

Karl That sent me laughing, I've read it, sounds exactly like E. Thanks.
The mileage on the thing keeps piling up quick and quick. In exactly one week since the delivery, I've done over 1050 kms/650 miles. The range showing on one tank is over 1200 kms/750 miles and it's not run in yet! That's done mostly with highway driving, however not at optimised speeds (60 mph/100 kmh) when the consumption is the best, but at higher speeds when the consumption already starts to climb (85 mph/135 kmh). This Clydesdale doesn't eat much
Yesterday was raining all day so I've christened it in the wet, those windscreen wipers are ingenious, they work better than conventional items. Excellent.

KnightRider:

I am glad that you enjoyed the Clydesdale analogy.

What model E do you have? A Diesel? Because with a 20 (?) gal. tank and getting 750 miles per tank, you are getting 38 miles per gallon.

Waowee,- that's economee!

How big is your gas (diesel) tank?

If it is a 16 gallon tank, you are getting 750 miles per tank, that equals 47 mpg!

Karl, I am not sure about the size of the tank myself, there are two sizes, for E 320 and E 500 they are bigger, 80 liters against 60 for the rest of the present range. However 60 sounds too small for this car, maybe it's 70, but then there is no such size and it can't be 80 as we didn't order a bigger tank as far as I know. I'll figure out next time I fill it up.
Looking at instant consumption figures though, it can be around 47 mpg, but that's without pushing it, crusing at 70-80 mph or so with occasional overtaking.
In any case this was one of the primary reasons we went for 270 CDI, we wanted an economical, but comfortable car.

Karl,
I´ve just figured out the size of the tank after filling it up. It´s 80 liters big, however the standard size on E 240 and E 270 CDI is 65 liters.
I referred to German pricelist on MB website and found some interesting info I didn´t know before - you get 80 liters tank in E 240 and E 270 CDI if you order it as Elegance or Avantgarde. As standard in Classic trim cars it is still 65 liters.
80 liters tank is really handy.

Tnx KnightRider:

VOLUME CONVERSION
80 Liters equals 21.1338 Gallons (US)

I wish that I had this large size tank!

My tank only holds 16 gallons, which requires a re-fill around every 250 miles, with a gallon +/- in reserve.

A larger tank keeps you less fuel focused, more time to enjoy the CLK!

90 Liter gas tank!

On my W124 E320 sedan I had a 90 Liter gas tank, which was an option for late W124 sedans and coupes.
