About to give up on my exhaust

Hi All,

I absolutely love my 2007 e550 except I am just about to give up on exhaust. I had a second cat delete, resonator delete, and x-pipe done but it still is very quite. Searched at least dozen hours for a good cat back or muffler, but aside from the several thousand dollar options I could not find anything (remus, supersprint, etc.). I love modding but I am simply not spending thousands of dollars on cat back exhaust on a 13 year car. There are some people that put a AMG muffler (c63, e55, e63) on their car, but I feel it is risky since I would have to buy it used and there is the risk that it would not fit or sounds good and I could not return it..

I just wish there was a viable solution for my exhaust, where I could spend less than 1K and have a good sounding car. Feel free to make suggestions. And yes, I have searched this forum extensively..

Muffler delete with J Pipe, resonator delete switch to X Pipe, and leave it there. Loud, yet subtle at the same time. Not loud at idle or cruising but at WOT it bounces off trees.

Edit:
Arfisch's thread at https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...acle-pipe.html explains the entire process in depth. The idea of the J Pipe is to serve as a Helmholtz Resonator to cancel drone. See photos below to see the J Pipe Setup followed by the X Pipe resonator setup.

Have you tried just removing the muffler, it is pretty cheap option to get some pretty decent sound? The j-pipe mentioned above is quite important to get rid of drone. My old 07 e550 I had c63 mufflers + x pipe and it was everything I ever wanted it to be but i am not sure how easy those are to come by nowadays.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard about the muffler delete, but I fear it would be too loud. My current set up: second car delete and x pipe which sounds okay. How did your sound improve when you switched to c63 mufflers?? I see those on ebay but they are quite pricey..

Check Craigslist for parted out c63 or E63 as well. The muffler delete isn't too loud except for WOT, but with a secondary cat delete, that may be a different story.

I would say the muffler delete is about the most budget friendly mod you can do. Get a muffler shop to just chop it off, drive it around for a little bit, if you don't like it, pay them back to reweld it back on and lose out on maybe $150. If you like the sound, have them weld on a new straight pipe + j pipe and spend a little more.

The c63 mufflers in my opinion was one of the best things I installed on my 07 e550, sound was definitely a head turner, everyone thought it sounded just like an AMG. e55 and e63 mufflers are quieter so maybe you might want to consider that if you think already having the 2nd cats off is too much. Understand though amg mufflers are quad tips, you'll have to buy a new lower valance/diffuser panel to compensate for the extra tips.

I don't have any clips of my exhaust setup since it was a long time ago for me, but this youtube clip I found pretty much sums it up.

Hi all,
Sound great, and very interesting post !
As i'm looking for better sound on my old stock 2002 E500, these informations are very helpful
I also inquire the possibility to installing a electric cut valve (installed before the muffler or the resonator…...This solution have the avantage to switch on/off when you want ! Considering that i don't necessarily want to have a louder sound all the time.
If anyone already has experience with this, it would be great to know how it sound.

I have a 2007 E550 just did a muffler delete on it,no j-pipe see no reason for that, there is no drone at any rpm, used black 4 inch tips with perforated inner core, sounds great on hard acell pretty mild sounding at cruise

Mercedes w211 E550
I own a 2008 Mercedes E550. I had my stock mufflers removed and E63 mufflers installed that I purchased from a GarageMan based in Sacramento. The used w211 E63 mufflers were about $400. I also had my resonators removed and replaced with an X Pipe. I also had my bumper trimmed to fit the new quad tips. The whole job took about 2.5 hours. The exhaust shop charged me $360. The stock e63 exhaust pipe size is close to 3'. To not lose power, keep your exhaust pipe close to 2.75", which is close to the stock exhaust pipe size for an E550. It sounds great and there is no drone inside the car. I will try to post some pics. Please excuse the dirty car.
