Very enjoyable thread to read. Single here, with no kids but am also looking into the E-class wagon as the next upgrade.

R-Class?

I've heard this described as a wagon. To me it's a minivan. At first I absolutley hated it. But the more I see, the more I like. Especially the R55

Its got some huge (wide/long) rear doors! Must be tough to open by the kids without slamming a car parked next to you in a Mall parking lot!

I am thinking the same thing about the R Class. However, my impression is that the R has more graceful lines and is lower in height to be really considered a minivan. I would tend to say it is more like an elegant people mover.

The reason I went with an E class wagon was that my parents liked the height, and the style, of it, so that tipped the scales for me.

And I think it is hard for other cars, and you can include SUV's, to match the fit, finish and beautiful detailing in the E class wagons, especially with the better quality productions from 2007 onwards.

Here's another factor in favor of a wagon that I forgot -- rarity. Where I live, and most places I've been to in the US, MLs are a dime a dozen (especially in silver), while E-class wagons are quite rare. It's nice to have a car that you don't see all over the place.

'04 E500 Wagon
Wagons Rule

Opted for an E500 Wagon after 10+ years of Land Rovers, Series III,
and a couple of Range Rovers -- Lucas, the prince of darkness.

Wanted the space, but did not want a mini-van, and did not want
another "suv". Would likely have gone for a "R" if I'd found one with
the diesel.

Wagon is ever so handy, I'd never get most of the stuff I end
up traveling with / transporting in a sedan.

Besides, looks much better then a suv or mini-van.

LOL - I used to work for Lucas, the Switchgear division back in the late 80's. Better to move on, as you have

Automobile makers rarely market wagons well in the U.S.

The C-Class wagon needs to be sold here.

C-wagons are sold in Canada (but are far too expensive for what you're getting)... are they not in the US?

Not the new one - wish it were. Beautiful car.

My E500 4matic wagon represents the best performance/cargo/fuel mix currently on the US market. It's only competitor is the V70R which is discontinued.

Don't think sedan vs wagon. Think minivan or SUV (especially crossovers which I HATE) vs wagon. Granted, here in Germany, the wagon is especially nice considering our driving conditions. But, I think the wagon still represents a better car for the US market as well.

As you guys have discussed, however, the majority of the US market disagrees, and would rather have a crossover than a wagon.

Sorry european sedan owners, but I think in almost every case (*) the sports wagon is more beautiful than its sedan variant. BMW 3,5...Audi 4, 6, and M/B C, E.

* = I believe the CLS is one of the most beautiful sedans I have ever seen.

My .02,

Smash

if your not looking to go off-road which 95% of SUV owners dont, a wagon is much more practical easier to park, and more fun to drive....

I looked at the R class and the salesman told me it would pull 5,000 lbs. Of course after looking at the MB website, it said towing not recommended. I kept the Yukon XL for towing the camper, it gets great mileage parked!

You can certainly buy an OEM towing kit for the E-class in Europe.
