Curiousity: What's the point of the wagon?
The reason I went with an E class wagon was that my parents liked the height, and the style, of it, so that tipped the scales for me.
And I think it is hard for other cars, and you can include SUV's, to match the fit, finish and beautiful detailing in the E class wagons, especially with the better quality productions from 2007 onwards.

and a couple of Range Rovers -- Lucas, the prince of darkness.
Wanted the space, but did not want a mini-van, and did not want
another "suv". Would likely have gone for a "R" if I'd found one with
the diesel.
Wagon is ever so handy, I'd never get most of the stuff I end
up traveling with / transporting in a sedan.
Besides, looks much better then a suv or mini-van.

My E500 4matic wagon represents the best performance/cargo/fuel mix currently on the US market. It's only competitor is the V70R which is discontinued.
Don't think sedan vs wagon. Think minivan or SUV (especially crossovers which I HATE) vs wagon. Granted, here in Germany, the wagon is especially nice considering our driving conditions. But, I think the wagon still represents a better car for the US market as well.
As you guys have discussed, however, the majority of the US market disagrees, and would rather have a crossover than a wagon.
Sorry european sedan owners, but I think in almost every case (*) the sports wagon is more beautiful than its sedan variant. BMW 3,5...Audi 4, 6, and M/B C, E.
* = I believe the CLS is one of the most beautiful sedans I have ever seen.
