First diesel vehicle was a Volvo 940 which compared to the Mercedes-Benz CDI range was quite literally a tractor. Noisy, smelly, poor performance, frequent and costly servicing.
Next Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 212CDI Automatic. Excellent vehicle stunning performance (for type of vehicle) reliable 2.7 diesel
E-class 210 320CDI this replaced the Volvo and converted our family instantly. Our first Mercedes-Benz car and definitely not our last. I would not hesitate in recommending the 210 320CDI to anyone.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 213CDI Sprint Shift. Replacement for the previous vehicle. I am not convinced that the engine performance is any better (130hp compared to 120hp) The gearbox is a technical master piece. Described as a 'clutchless' manual gearbox, but still changes gear 'automatically'. Unfortunately I wanted the smooth ride of a prper automatic and this gearbox does not offer that. Sadly it is the only 'automatic' Mercedes-Benz had for the new Sprinter. Having said that I am still amazed when I listen to the vehicle automatically changing gear. (double de-clutching type noises) The reason for replacement was due to lessons learnt on the internal layout of the first vehicle.
E-class S211 320CDI Replacement for the previous E-class. Although basically the same engine, it is the 'next generation' improvement. Better performance and even better economy. After a number of minor niggling teething problems we are even more impressed with this E-class. My recommendation would be with a warning about expecting to have a few niggly problems. I would suggest a calm patient relationship with the dealer to reslove any problems. (do not settle for anything other than perfection)
I am undeniably a CDI fan and am still amazed by the power, performance and economy of these excellent engines.
In Europe the CDI is cheaper than the equivalent petrol vehicle (with exactly the same options) and I believe it is a far better investment. (personal opinion)
Happy motoring,
John

I understand that there are loopholes that you can use to get one now, such as buying a used demo

Diesel Car
Having just returned from a vaction starting in Atlanta then onwards to Keywest & Orlando we hired a 300 C V6 3.5L Crysler & did 4500miles . I was somehow dissapointed with the performance of this car compared to say my old model MB 320 CDI which would have walked away from the 300 C. The Mb even gave me about between 35 -39 Mpg ,not bad considering it got nailed nearly all the time.
