another one is going to join Bangle 7er "raised butt" club

all top level of luxurious cars are going to have the same look from the rear -- raised butt (we have no choice except acceptance. )

That interior if that is the new S prototype is awful.. Step in the wrong direction. I just hope that is one of several prototypes.

RL, and apparently W221 have iDrive like interfaces in addition to bustle trunk. At least the Toyota doesn't have iDrive.

However the Toyota turns off nav and telephone input above 5 mph.

Toyota doesn't have iDrive
Toyota/Lexus selectively copies "good" things from its competitors. Obviously, iDrive is one of "bad" designs -- who needs the old fashion iDrive dial if your central console is a touch screen design? (in electronics side, German cars are far behind Japanese cars.)

e.g.
If you own e39 then you know how wrong e60 is to use iDrive for simple functions like changing CD and varying air distribution. (if you don't buy HUD option then it becomes very challenging to use iDrive while you are driving because of your eyeCan'tDrive -- using your right hand to hold dial and using your eyes to look at a central console while you are driving a car -- very lousy design indeed. Of course, your left hand still has to hold the steering wheel and your right foot has to switch between gas or brake petals, if your e60 has a manual stick (why not?) then your left foot and right hand are busy as well -- suddenly, you understand iDrive means car drives you (nut) not "I drive" car. (I think iDrive is a transition product, the next generation product is combined both touch screen and voice recognition console.)

iDrive already has voice recognition. However, VR is not as fast as a good button and is more distracting because of the aureal feedback. The shrouded central screen procludes a touch screen...lost drivers can't reach it!

The iDrive group looks like it will include Acura, Infiniti, Audi, and MB in addition to BMW. The underlying concept may not be wrong (force feedback knobs), however a Csaba noted in the September Car and Driver, maybe they should be copying iPod and not iDrive.

Picture came from the latest (Sept. '04) Car & Driver Mag. pg.33. Also has "spy shots" of front and rear. Rear end does not look quite as ugly as the BMWs but the trend is disturbing. Latest 5 series is hideous!! Save the E!!

Sorry, that will never be the LS 430. The LS 430 will follow the LF-S styling cues to be more dramatic in design. As well as offer possibly a 5.0 liter V-8 and we know a high-performance hybrid is coming.

BTW, this "new" Bangle raised butt is very old. The Hyandai Sonota has had it for YEARS now. AS the current Hyandai XG 350.
Flame Surfacing is not new either. It's just another name for "New Edge" design that failed for FOrd. Remember the Mercury Couger?

Designers need to get off the computer and get back to some damn clay....

Firstly MB isnt copying BMW's 7er style rear! (MB had signed of the new S class design before the new 7er came out!) And
Secondly that interior pic is not the final interior. Interior will kinda different but look somewhat similar to 7er coz of double hump positioning, MB's I -drive positioning and stick moved to steering wheel.

If that's true then I hope MB learns from BMW's mistake and does something about it.

Why would MB copy the universally derided and

pretty much butt-ugly 7 series and its now infamous iDrive, which remains the butt of automotive jokes across the planet? Makes no sense. All of the new BMWs seem to have fallen out of the ugly tree and whacked every branch on the way down.

I was able to read "Majesta" in the rear license plate holder
DWP, Could you read this license plate? Is it a Georgia plate?

That's not a Georgia plate. Looks like it's a Florida plate. But then, that car is definitely not in Florida. There are no hills like that in Florida.

My guess would be hot weather testing out in Mesa, Arizona. Driving by there during the summer you would sometimes see a few cars on the highway all taped up with black tape and stuff followed by a minivan support vehicle.

The plate is Florida. When the current S class was being tested it too was in Fl as I saw a group of three on I95 in Ft Laud, I gave the lead driver the tumbs up and he replied with the same; I was driving a 911 cab. I beleive they make a trip through certain pre-selected areas of the country. I too saw the same dash pic in another car mag; I hope it was just there for camouflage purposes.
