Rubber Hose Preservation Agent?
Hi everyone! A thread on keyless door handle repair included a note about silicone spray preserving and renewing the rubber components. Can anyone throw light on renewing/preserving engine and other rubber based components - suspension, driveline, etc...? Silicone? Diaelectric grease?Of course replacement is optimal, but nobody likes a breakdown in no-man's land.

Dielectric grease is mainly for electrical components so i tend to use it on plugs and connectors that are underneath or outside of the car that are exposed to the elements. I use silicone spray on rubber parts to remove or install them (exhaust hangers) but not as a preserving method. I know Sonax makes a rubber restore/protect product you rub on the door seals etc. and it works well.

Rubber starts aging/degrading the moment it leaves the factory. Not really possible to stop the process. Add constant heat cycling from the engine and you have accelerated aging. Check out the breather hoses on some of the engines. When new, the rubber hose is soft and very flexible. Give it a few years of use in a hot engine bay, the hose becomes rock hard. Pfizer would be proud.
You might consider keeping it clean, as it would prevent any chemicals from making it age faster. Then you are still dealing with normal heat and stress/pressure.
