2003 benz glycol in transmission issue-- no recall??!

hey all do we know why benz doesnt have a recall for the glycol transmission issue that affected so many 2003 model mercedes benzes? it seems to be an obvious issue that should be rectified by mercedes, i spent 4000 fixing mine and they affected cars around as early as 30000 miles. is it possible a recall may be issued later?

It's not a SAFETY issue. Recalls only happen when a defect can kill you. See the sunroof recall for example.

i understand not safety issue but its a defective part shouldnt they do something about that ? it basically ruins the 2nd most expensive piece of hardware besides the engine itself i am just shocked that nothing has been done as of this point. I did see the bulletins but they should actively be switching out these faulty radiators isnt it?????

Youre talking about a 17 year old car. These cars are on their 3rd and 4th owner or in the junkyard now. It's easy enough to simply bypass the radiator with a separate transmission cooler, if you're handy. Crying for a recall isn't going to get you much sympathy around here. Every problem and fix on these cars is well documented by now.

The car basically came with a 4 year/50k warranty. So if it failed during that time period, it would have been covered by warranty. There's lots of other issues like the balance shaft in the 2006/some 2007 models which have no coverage either. It's basically no longer under warranty, there's no reason for them to cover it. It's like buying an appliance that you expect to last for at least 5-10 years or maybe 10+, but those only come with a 1 year warranty and when it expires, you're out of luck if it fails. That is one reason to do you own research before buying, the 2003 models were well known to have bad radiators. Should always check to see if it was replaced. Same with the balance shaft issue, if it wasn't already fixed, realize it's a possible failure. I also knew on the M272 that the intake manifold would go. There's no warranty for that either, but it cost me around $800+ to have it replaced.

Buyer beware has been a term used since Roman times and is still applicable today.
