Hi there. I’m trying to troubleshoot the NTG2.5 in our 2009 E350 wagon. The head unit will work fine - briefly - on radio, CD or nav (haven’t used Bluetooth or iPod). After 30 seconds or so the headunit will reboot, play fine for another 30 seconds, reboot, and so on.
A fiber optic bypass loop loop is on the way so we can try to isolate a failed component. The dealer found no codes and recommended replacing the headunit for $3200 bucks (uh, no).
Curiously, if we unplug the amp, CD and nav start working (though obviously without sound) but radio isn’t available. With the amp unplugged, the headunit doesn’t reboot at all. We swapped in a different amp but Comand went back to rebooting every 30 seconds with that amp , too.
Try disconnecting battery for 15 minutes or so. If this fails and COMAND unit needs replacement post VIN I will provide compatible part #s to shop used.

If I'm able to locate a good used COMAND unit, will I also need the anti-theft code? Ebay and Copart sellers don't usually seem to have them available.
I had a similar problem sometime back. Not sure if you have the same head unit with HK speakers as mine see pic below. The 6 disc CD changer is integrated into the headunit and has a SD hard slot. If so - It could be that the NAV hard disk is failing. This is an AT type HD in the headunit. You can remove the HD which is located in a access compartment at the bottom of the headunit. FYI in 2009 W211 was the last production year before MB moved to the W212. for this year I am learning that MB used the ML 350 headunits (Just in case you are trying to use an aftermarket unit). Thanks for the info. We picked up a working unit secondhand but found it has a couple lines of dead pixels. I wonder if we couldn’t swap the nav hard drive from the used unit into our lower-mile original? Might give that a go.
Swapped the nav hard drive from the working unit to ours. Same behavior - constant rebooting. So whatever is wrong with ours is still there. The replacement works fine and didn’t have to be coded. Thanks for all the suggestions, found a secondhand unit locally for $200 and we’re calling it a win.
Yes, per my first post, original headunit was checked by the dealer - no codes. Interestingly, the replacement unit with a couple lines of dead pixels in the display has healed itself. After a few weeks of use the display is now 100%. The black pixels slowly started working again, a few at a time. I’ve never heard of that happening, ever.
I updated my head unit with my Star Diagnosis and that resolved my issue. No more restarting. Now I’m wondering why the dealership never checked for updates. The update resolved about 15-20 known bugs and problems and added a few new things to functionality and usability of the system.
At the same time I updated my HD radio/Satellite radio receiver and my brand new sound system amplifier.
Tomorrow I’m gonna update the maps data with last and final version of 2017 and I’m still working on reversing the firmware to find a solution for video in motion. That might take a while.
any chance you could share the update files? I will try to find someone with a star system, would be nice if i could do it with an Autel as that is accessible... my problem was the unit used to turn off after playing for some time (and this was a problem for about a year), then it would get stuck on the Mercedes logo screen for a few months, now it will not turn on at all. pulled out the radio and it has a green sticker on it that sasys "exchange unit" so when I paid the dealership to fix my radio when my wife left the sunroof open during a downpour, they put a rebuilt one in.. wish I had just kept the water damaged screen in hindsight.....
