Tire Wear on E500
I need to replace my back tires after 8000 miles already. I know I drive alot.
Is this normal? I know I drive hard but this tire wear is crazy.....Its only been 4 months since I had my car.
Any suggestions on choice of new tire.
My car is at the dealership now and I dont remember what the tire sizes are. Can someone confirm if they are:
8 x 18 ET30 245/40 R18 (Front)
9 X 18 ET39 265/35 R18 (Rear)
They are Continental Sport Contact Tires...

The OEM Continentals are not very hard wearing....although it depends on ur driving.....8000 miles is not a lot. My car had a change at 12000 miles.
I think the Pirelli Zero Rosso or Goodyear F1 are not bad tyres. But TOYOS are also getting popular especiially the new Ts-R .
But Z rated tyres are not cheap either at that rate of wear.

Correct me if I am wrong, but.. don't tires have a 12,000 mile warranty?
If so, then, unless you're abusing them, it seems like they should be replaced under warranty.

Thats not right...tires shouldn't wear out that fast. I have 18.5k miles on mine and they still look pretty damn new. BTW, mine are the ones that come with the sport package.

SportContacts are 160, SportContact2s are 280. I don't think speed rating is relevant other than to distinguish variations. How may times do you go over 130 anywhere in the US?
If you are getting new tires, I would be very interested to find out how Falken ST115s work out. They are supposed to handle well yet be very quiet and provide a good ride. Ditto the all season ZE512s. However the ST115s should handle better and a lot of people have already provided rave reports on the ZE512s (they became popular after a Consumer's Reports test last fall).

the dealership has agreed to cover some of the cost of the tires for me....after i brought up the fact that i have brought the car in 4-5 times over pulling to the right and the steering shake at over 40-50.
Just frustrated right now....
I think i might go with the Michelins.....
But everyone is saying that once they're Z rated tires I will not get over 10,000 miles on them. A few have suggested in going down from the Z's but i dont want to compromise my quality ride and any traction.
Any ideas?

My 04 CLK500 has outer edge wear on the fronts which started to show at only 3500 miles, I too brought the car in for the pulling to the right issue and a bolt kit was installed but the wear continues to this day (9000 miles). The dealer will replace fronts nut I am waiting fro them to come up with an explanation for the outer edge wear...too much toe-in? My rears are wearing in the centers more than the outer edges so I guess the recommended cold pressures are too high.
Never had these particular issues on a benz before.

Can you define what you mean by "hard driving"? I think the premature tire wear answer will lie somewhere in your definition of hard driving. Regardless it is fortunate that your dealer will cover some of the costs of the replacement tires. I think other dealers would blame the driver and say it's not our problem.
As for replacement tires, the Z speed rating should not affect "my quality ride and any traction." I don't see the logic behind V or Z rated tires being any different in terms of ride quality and traction. To me, I can't see how one tire that is V rated and the same type of tire which is Z rated could have a major difference in traction. Since the speed rating is purely for speed, traction should not be affected. However after saying all this, I believe there is a psycological benefit or peace of mind in knowing that you purchased Z rated tires. Hey if you can afford it, why not?

Tirescribe
I'm wondering if this device would help:
Scribes a 1/32" v-across tread. Would give both pressure and wear indication that otherwise isn't available with street tires. Further handling adjustments would require spring/bar/shock changes, which are also not readily available on street cars.

Hard driving means that I dont necesarily slow down when going around corners and every chance i get i punch the gas pedal.....the damn car wont stay under a 100....
V or Z must make a differnce....if not...why would anyone buy Z that are more expensive.....what does the speed rating really means anyway?
