Angry Help-Deployed airbags for no reason

I have a 2007 Mercedes E350. On Monday, while driving, the passenger side airbags deployed, possible from hitting a bump or the curve (no damage to the body, tire, rim-except few curve rush signs. Mercedes quoted 10k to replace and they could not tell me why they deployed, other than possible from hitting a bump or the curve. Next day, after a short trip, when I got back and parked in the driveway, the engine turned off and now it does not start. All dash light and messages display, but no crank at all. I have a foxwell NT630 plus that would not power when connected. Replaced fuse #30 (was blown) and now the tool connects. It reads the SRS messages, but no connection for engine codes. I checked most of the fuses and they are all good. Not sure if I can check the relays. I called Corporate Mercedes and they can't help, they said this things happen sometimes. No recall for airbags for the year and model.
Anyone else had any similar experiences? What course of action did you take? I do not have full coverage on the car, only liability.

Regards

Kosmo

As far as recourse, there is none… either fix it or get a different car.

Did you hit something or not? These don’t go off randomly.

On latter MY cars, if a “crash” is detected, it needs to be cleared with Star Diag in the appropriate modules.

So you can communicate with the SRS and not ME (engine ecu)? How about any other modules?

I have not tried the other modules. I will try and also post some pics with the vehicle and tool messages.

As far as hitting the curve or bump, yes , most likely. My wife was driving, no passenger in the car. Car was drivable and no damage is visible. Mercedes did check and there is no damage underneath either, at least not visible. The steering is fine (I have to check the angles with the tool). I am just very surprised that airbags will deploy without actual impact or crash.

The SRS module did its job and deployed the side bags when your wife hit the curb. Get it fixed or get a new car. Insurance should handle this.

And whose fault is that? Take responsibility for your own goddamn actions. Everybody's looking for a free handout or to blame someone else. Nut the *** up.

tjts1, you seem like one of those who just comments to stay busy. I am trying to find out if other had similar experiences with airbags deployments. I am not looking for any handouts. If you did not have a similar experience, move on and comments on post you can apply your experience.

Have never seen or heard of an errant SRS activation on an 211. The 204 had a campaign to replace the control module and one of the listed failure possibilities was accidental deployment, but we never actually saw that happen, just replaced them all because of the recall. I saw one time on a Jeep Liberty where the airbags went off on their own, I had the car running in my bay and the drivers bag went, followed by the passenger about 5 seconds later. That particular vehicle also had a recall for the SRS module that had not been carried out, and the damage was repaired by the dealer as part of the recall for the customer.

At this point there is little you can do. If the driver is not sure if they hit something hard enough to deploy the airbag, I'd suggest that they need to be far more careful when driving in the future.

Gotta admit that the whole "probably deployed from hitting a curb" is weird. It either did deploy on hitting something or it didn't. It isn't like there's a time delay from the hit and deployment.
Junkyard parts and a Xentry clone will fix it up for way less than $10k.

Most salvage yards won't sell used airbags anymore thanks to the Takata debacle, it opens them up to liability if they sell you a used airbag that should have been recalled and wasn't replaced before the car was taken off the road. I agree though with fixing it yourself and keeping it, at this point, the damage is pretty minor and used parts won't kill you on the cost if you can find them.

You may, I am not sure though, be able to code out the side airbags. If you can't find the actual airbag, just replace the door panel and the SRS module if needed and code it as a car without side airbags, so you don't get a fault from the deployed or missing parts.

the pictures I posted are after the event. as you can see, there was no hit, no body or bumper damage. Mercedes inspected under and no visible damage underneath either. So the certainty is that the side airbags deployed.
