how to remove trunk lid handle and troubleshoot
2006 E320 CDI.....250K miles
The trunk lid handle does not spring back anymore....no problem for the past two years as I only drive the car and I know how to manipulate the handle. Now it decides its not letting me in the trunk. the electric switch on the door doesn't work but finally use the key and I'm in. Trying to remove the trunk lid handle and the you tube videos show two torx screws coming from the bottom of the switch inboard of the license plate lamps....but not on my car. What holds this in...been searching for 15 minutes and no success. Thought I would try here. any troubleshooting advice? The fuse for the electric lock is intact too.
If you leave the key in, the trunk will open as a plastic tumbler moves into place and the latch spring back feature works again.
first priority is to remove the lock....any suggesting on where to start??
thanks,
Ed

Well, mine does not have the two bolts shown in your first file. I watched a you tube on how to remove and they show these bolts. My car does not have these bolts exposed. Not sure why but when I look inside the rear lid, I can see the thread from the screw but no screw head. Trunk lid panel is off so everything is exposed.

I had an issue with the trunk release handle releasing the trunk but then the trunk wouldn't close electrically. Turns out road grime had made the trunk release (a big handled electric switch, really) stick in the "sort of open" position. Cleaning up the handle and pivot made all well.

If you have not already done so remove trunk lid paneling and check underside.

squirt some WD40 at either end of the handle work it back and forth, until free, then use spray lithium grease through red pipette nozzle or even better wax based spray chain lube.
