New '04 E500

Lease is up on mom's E430 this month so I went down to look at the colors in person today. Tried to steer her into a light color (long gravel driveway) like silver or platnium blue but after seeing them in person, they just don't do it for me. Granite grey? No way! Is it me or does this car look better in dark clothes?

Anyway, spotted an '04 Techtite with Charcoal E500 on the lot. Built in April with sunroof only. Maybe that's why it had 63 miles on the clock and still not sold...until now. Had a few misgivings about buying a car with so many relative miles and months on the lot but the $$ savings was too much to pass up for a grocery getter. I figure the included maintenance and $600 lower invoice will save about $3000 over the next 4 years compared to an '05. Even though they delivered it to her tonight, is there anything I'm missing on this '04 vs '05?

The way that car was equipped is the way most dealers order them in for the "sales floor" because 1. its an MB, 2. Its an E 500, 3. Its got a sunroof, & 4. It has an attractive Sticker Price. Its nuts like us who add all the personal goodies that can add 15 grand to the sticker in a heartbeat. Most people don't need all the "goodies" or want to learn how to use them. Its got everything she could want in it, she'll love it. (You too)

LOL - You're right. I had a hard time getting over the lack of options until I looked at the miles on her 4 year old E430. She had less than 25,000 and I'll bet my brother and sister put half of those on it!

Ummm.. okay.
I think he meant the car looks better with darker colors; btw, techtite is one of the better colors IMO, and wouldn'nt have been available for '05 becasue it was discontinued

w211 & w124
I have always been a brilliant silver kind of guy but with the w211 I am starting to wonder. The tail just looks kinda plain to me. Front and side views are beautiful but the rear just doesn't look that good.

I too have always liked Brilliant Silver. My W210 E55 and the W210 E430 I got for my mom in 2000 were both this color. After seeing the W211 body in this and other light colors, I think Pewter, Techtite, Onyx and Jade are a much better choice. The dark colors seem to highlight the sexy lines of the W211 while the light colors wash everything out. IMO

Is Flint Gray (05) lighter than Techtite (04)? Hard to say from the paint chip. Didn't see any on the dealer lot.

Price paid was invoice. I don't have it in front of me anymore but it was $55K and change on a sticker of ~$60,300. $1330 drive off which I assume is DMV and other lease fees. I think the MF was .0025 or 6% and payments are $875.

First impressions: I drove it for about 90 minutes today in the hills around home and find that it handles and rides BETTER than my W210 E55! Steering is very responsive and more precise around the tight hairpin turns where I live. I like being able to switch between the Sport 2 and Comfort settings on the Airmatic DC. Talk about having your cake and eating it too!

Tires and wheels are a little weak visually IMO. A little too much gap in the wheel wells. Car sits higher on the right side, BTW. Amost 1/2 inch! They are quiet and comfortable but can be pushed reasonably hard without too much squeal.

HK radio sounds much better than the old Bose system. Spatial quality is much more realisitc. Love the in-dash CD changer. Much more usefull.

7 speed transmission is smooth as silk and much quicker than the superb 5 speed. Amazing how little feedback you feel during shifts up or down until you put your foot in it. Car feels much lighter and quicker than the W210 430. Can't wait until the break in period is over to really put it to the test.

For a grocery getter, this car is perfect. If it were for me, I'd still need the other $35,000 worth of options to be happy
