Issues with gear shifting corrected when restarted engine

Hi all. Just bought an 04’ e500 with 160k miles. Car has the 7 speed (non-4 matic). Car was really well taken care of. I’ve put about 1k miles on the car and some weird shifting behavior has started to happen. This has happened on 3 different occasions now.

I’m driving at 40-50mph and then as I try to accelerate the car stays in that gear. If I accelerate it will continue to rev with no shifting. I pull the car over, turn it off and on and then no issue and the car shifts very smoothly.

A week later I’m driving at 40-50mph. I slow down to a red light. Then when the light turns green the car is stuck in the high gear (probably 4/5th). I pull over, turn car off then on and no problem. During these events the tiptronic shifter will not engage any gear I select. Only turning the car off and on fixes the issue.

The tranny had a service done in July of this year by previous owner (flush + new fluid). The car otherwise shifts well and smooth during normal driving.

I tried the TCU reset procedure a few weeks ago after this first happened but doesnt seem to have done much. Car just gets stuck in a gear.

Is this something I should be worried about?

Was the connector for the TCU also changed during the service? It is known issue of oil passing through the connector, and it is recommended service part during service.

Oil in the connector will trigger random behavior.

Hello,
Did you manage to solve the problem?
I just bought a new car, W212 and at first it seemed everything ok, even the diagnostic showed that everything was working well.
Now after a few days I face same problem like you did, changing gears at high revs, it goes up to gear 5 and then wont go more, everything goes away after turning off and on.
Please let me know,
Thanks
