Spare key questions
Hi
Last Monday I got a fob key cut/programmed for my E280.
Key fob works well, BUT the metal key inside was cut to copy the old one and it will lock the car but won't unlock it.
Key guy reckons that a new machine he is getting soon will be able to cut key according to the manufacturer's key code, which I'm guessing is unique to each car.
Q - where do I find this code? Previously with my old Toyota I could get the code from a dealer, as long as I showed proof of ownership. (Is this case the registration papers.)
Is this the same with a Mercedes Benz dealer?

Given that a dealer can cut you a new key accordi g to your VIN, I'd say yes. Question is whether they'll share/ sell you that information instead of a key.

In the US, they just go by the vin of the car to cut you a key. If you just want the metal key instead of the entire keyfob, it's a little cheaper, I think people said it cost about $75 just for the metal key from the dealer. How much is the locksmith charging? You can also call and check your local dealer.
