Double Layer DVD

Has anybody tried playing a double layer DVD in the 2005 single disk slot? Or does anybody know whether or not the player is capable of playing double layer DVD discs?

I recall reading something in the manuals about the thickness of the DVD's/CD's.. I think it's not supposed to exceed 3mm, or something like that.

So, if your double-layered DVD exceeds those specs.. I guess it might get stuck.

Check the COMMAND docs, under single CD player specifications.

Miguk,
A double layered DVD is not physically double thick. They are the same size as a regular DVD.

Dema,
Hmm...really? Yes, burned double layer MP3 DVDs. I guess I'll try it then. I was just hoping that this has already been confirmed because I would only burn it for use in the car and double layer DVDs are relatively expensive.

Baby Jocko:

Just came across this TSB:

P-82_00-260 JUL 03 Audio System - Dual Sided CD's Won't Eject

You might want to look into that. My source: AllData.Com item #49.

Thanks for the tip Miguk. But, I don't think we're talking about the same thing here. Double layered DVDs are not dual sided. It has two layers on the same side. The laser focuses to the specified depth of each layer. AFAIK, the physical thickness is the same as a regular single layer DVD.

And to add to the above, most Hollywood movies are dual layer.

The question here is about disks made by dual layer burners.

Im glad someone finally clarified this; lol. I'll burn a Dual layer disc tonight with at least 8 gigs on the disc and see if it plays. I'll post a report tomorrow.

That's why I would like to know if it works before I burn one of these. Yes, DL discs are very expensive. And besides being expensive, it takes a very long time to burn one. I see Newegg has a 5-pack for $49.00.

What I have come to realize about the single slot player is that it has problems with a fast-burn DVD, which now really makes me wonder if it can handle dual-layered discs. Even a 8x played on my home DVD players but had serious problems in the E. On one particular track it actually shut the whole car down. I have no idea how the DVD player can affect the car's computer, but it did. I have had no problems with 4x DVD burns.

Have you gotten it to play MP3's off a DVD? I have the euro headunit and keep getting disc errors on both dvd+r and dvd-r created through Roxio.

Derek, I think I read a post of yours that said you burned it as a data disc. You want to burn it as an MP3 disc instead. But then, are you certain that your head unit is capable of playing mp3s?

I have a 2004 E55, no euro headunit. I've tried putting DVD's in the in-dash cd player, 6-disk cd player, and DVD nav in the trunk. None work. Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible for me to play a DVD in my car w/o a euro unit? Also, does anyone know if the cd players in our cars are capable of reading MP3 format music CD's? Thanks

Anyone ever got dual layer dvds to work?

I burn Music Videos on DVD-R and DVD+R for my euro command and they play just fine... Even at 8x speed burning.... I've tried burning my music videos on a DVD+R DL and haven't gotten it to work yet... I'm using the Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4X. I also Bitsetting the disc to DVD-ROM booktype for compatibility issues. I just bought the fujifilm ones and will try that

Most burners need to be 'fixed' to support bitsetting.
I just re-flashed mine so I can set my DVD+R's to dvd-rom so I can play them in my Denon, otherwise sometimes they don't work all the time.
