How many CDI owners are here?
By the way....
I came back from a business trip from Toronto to northern Quebec and back. Here are some numbers I took down to alleviate the BOREDOM.
80mph......35.3 mpg over 30 miles.
75 mph......36.7 mpg US over 50 miles. Repeated 5 times.
60mph.......41.3 mpg US over 50 miles.
Total trip......1073 miles.
Average consumtion: 36.1 mpg US.
Average temperture....60 to 75 F.
Car has 3300 miles.
Cups of coffee.....5
Tickets.....0
Stupid drivers pet tricks......2
I took a 4,600 mile trip in a new E320 and found that my actual mileage was less than the trip computer was telling me. The trip computer was 6-7% too high.
In every car that I've had that had a computer, this is always the case.
Tank computed mileage at the time of fill up will always be less than what the computer
says is the average fuel mileage. Don't know why, but it always comes out that way.

The numbers are off the trip computer. If they are off, then it may not be that much because the 75mph one was taken a few times and it only varied by about .4 gallons. The number I gave was the average.
Full to fill up to top off was not that far out. I am going back in a few weeks and I will make shure I try to get a more exact picture. Also, I have jotted down EVERY liter of feul I have bought.
By the way, the tires are set at 35 pounds.

During the first two weeks of September, I took a 4000 mi driving vacation through Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and Arizona. My average mileage over the entire trip was 37.6 MPG, as computed manually by dividing miles run by gallons of fuel put in the tank. My best tank was 39.8 MPG, my worst was 36.4 MPG. The trip computer was accurate +/- 0.5 MPG over a tank of diesel. Most of the driving was at 75 MPH on cruise control.
When I was eastbound on I-40 between Albuquerque, NM and Amarillo, TX, and benefiting from a ~25 MPH tail wind, the trip computer was showing over 43 MPG for about 6 hours. Unfortunately, it dropped back into the upper 30's once the wind shifted to a quartering head wind.
The car was lightly loaded (just me and my luggage -- no passengers), and I raised the tire pressure to about 40 psi, which may or may not have helped the milage.
I never top off the tank when filling up. I consider the tank full once the fuel dispenser shuts off automatically the first time. I can usually get about 19.25 - 19.75 US gallons into the tank if I fill up right when the reserve fuel warning comes on (good for about 700 miles per tank + reserve.)
I also compared the vechicle's speedometer to a hand-held GPS and discovered it is dead-on accurate at highway speed. My other car's speedometer indicated about 2.5 MPH higher than the actual speed.
Temps varied from a low of about 45 one morning in the Rockies to a high of 105 near Hoover Dam. Temps during most of the driving time was in the mid 80s.
The car's got a little over 13,000 miles on the odometer now.
Your numbers are much the same as mine. The spread could be accounted for by the small hills I had to deal with and the tire pressure differential.
This thread should answer any questions about real world mileage in a CDI.

ToyCollector,
This was test was done strictly on cruise control. Also, the first time I took this trip I was averaging in the 32 mpg range. It appears diesels need a substantial break in period.

Highest mpg was 53mpg on a 18 mile run.
Expect 34mpg driving with a heavy right foot!
Marc
those numbers are the larger imperial gallons
