Without seeing it in person I can't really tell if I like it yet. So far I'm leaning toward the older style but with the cupholder issue maybe this one will be a nice change.

I hear it's only for the American market? Hopefully my incoming E will be spared this...

thats ugly....makes me now think that even though my 04 had some option removed (like the lights under the sideview mirrors) that the 04 are the best ones built so far....

I was under the impression that the center console was the area around the radio and temperature gauges, not just the armrest and shifter. While I definitely prefer the new shifter and area around the stereo, the new armrest/cupholder area is crap.

Downright ugly! Oh well, at least the 05's could play MP3s.

I don't know that this console cut any costs for them. I think it was a styling and cup holder improvement excercise.

Absolutely no freaken way. To me, the arm rest is CRITICAL part in my car. I rest my arm and very often there is a calculator clicking away for what I am thnking.

The new design SUCKS!

I just made an interesting observation. If you look into your car from an open door, & step back, the seam line you see going from rear to front just under the wood top doors follows the same slope as the new console, but continues its run over the old style cup holder which would now be inside the console rather than outside.

So essentially it looks like the height where you actually rest your arm will be the same as the old console. Your arm will rest on the tambour wood of the sliding top, just like your arm currently rests on our wood doors with their seam.

The whole deal then is just getting used to the look. I think now it might just have been done in response to the complaints about crappy cup holders.
The chrome vertical strip in front would apper to be there to hide a wide seam, but ther is no reason to think that they couldnt do as good a seam as they did on the old console which has no chrome.

It doesn't look THAT bad, in my opinion. I think it's elegant and clean if you ask me, but I sure do miss the famous pop-up cupholder on the MY05. But I'll stick with my current '04 center console.

The seam is there to hide the transition from leather to fake leather. Also, your arm rests on the wood door.. I have sat in two now..

I agree that the new armrest is ugly. I also don't know how I could use my iPod with it as easily as I currently do while enjoying a drink. I saw a Volvo today and it had the same type of vanishing cover center console. So, for $20-$30K less I can get the same ugly console designed probably by a Ford money conscious engineer. A CLEAR STEP BACK for the '05 E-500. Besides, it won't even play a DVD in the US and mine will.

I'm sure that the $20K-$30K difference was solely for the armrest...

I'm not sure I could buy another E Class with that console. For me it is such a step backward that I can't believe they would do that. Maybe it's like the "Cow Catcher" bumpers that were put on the S and SL cars in the 70's to meet the US bumper requirements. I felt at that time it was a sort of "Stick it in your eye" type of response.

I can almost hear the engineers saying if Americans want large cup holders we will give them what they want. Just be sure it's as ugly a solution that you can come up with.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I don't want a car where there is something like this where I will be irritated every time I get into the car. Right now, I get a good feeling each time I get into my Charcoal Leather CDI car. I guess if I want to continue with a W211 I had better keep my CDI. I haven't been too bothered as they have been removing things from the W211's but this is too much for me.
