Newbie needs help please!

Hello all,

I have a 2007 E30 Bluetec with approximately 162k miles. Well maintained, all work done by an independent, as I am not a DIYer. These last 2 years the vehicle has not seen much road time, as I work from home now. I recently had the following mechanical work done in this order: replace air intake temp sensor, engine oil cooler replaced, oil filter housing and gasket replaced, oil separator replaced, both engine and transmission mounts replaced and the turbocharger actuator replaced.
Since the repairs, I have had very erratic performance. When driving normal street or highway speeds, the RPMs will wildly go from 2K to 4K with a loss of power and little response from the accelerator. If I pull over, stop, restart the vehicle, it will return to somewhat normal operation. Also, there feels, in my layman’s terms, a shudder, stumble, misfire every 5-10 minutes when driving the vehicle. Sometimes, it can be barely noticed, other times it is very noticeable.
Any ideas what the issues may be before I go chasing repairs? Or what would you prioritize to check?
Thank you so much.

Since it sounds like coils and plugs in a gas engine, I’d suggest getting an OBDII computer for this vehicle and getting the codes. If you have not replaced glow plugs that would be my guess.

I’ve owned several of the 123 body diesels but lack the expertise to confidently address your issue

Other thing to check is if the turbo actuator replacement was paired to the turbo. I am a DIYer, and seems you can't simply go and buy a turbo actuator and install. I did so, and although the car runs, the car's performance was erratic.. throttle vs turbo behavior didn't seem right, especially light throttle, and when turbo would boost. Also seemed over boost potential.

I fixed my issue by fixing the faulty actuator.. some of the leads had broken off. I soldiered the connections and it's been working flawlessly now. You can search OM642 and turbo actuator. You will see many posts on how to fix if it is what I described.

Echo512,
Thanks for your reply. My work was done at a shop- how would I determine if the actuator was paired with the turbo? The two repairs were done at different shops at different times. If they aren’t paired, would that require another new turbo? This has just been very frustrating. Car runs fine at some points and others can’t make it around the corner. Thank you again

When I mentioned that the turbo actuator was paired to the turbo, I was hopeful that this can be done. I believe if you go to MB dealership, they will tell you that the turbo actuator (boost pressure positioner in WIS) is part of the turbo, and if this part wears out/fails, you have to replace the whole turbo, as you can't buy this individually (they are paired from factory).

Question for your mechanic may be if he replaced the turbo with the actuator, or just the actuator only. I think the only solutions are 1) repairing the actuator if reparable, or 2) MAYBE buying this actuator used, seller saying this actuator was taken off a 320 bluetec, or 3) replacing turbo and actuator that was sold as an unit.

Either case, take the car back to the mechanic and show him your issues. Perhaps there is some other issue, or code thrown.

Check this thread:

Some info on fix, and a part number to search (and mentioned this part isn't generally available, but may find on eBay).

Thank you Echo, I just dropped the car at the shop. Hopefully I get an update tomorrow. FWIW, the shop put on next actuator on approximately a week ago. Another shop replaced the turbo about a year ago. Does the new actuator need to calibrated or programmed somehow, or is this a plug and play part?

I'm unsure if a non-w211 turbo actuator can be made to work... Beyond me. I have a new turbo actuator sitting in my garage that I couldn't get to run smoothly... $70 brick. As I said, I fixed my actuator.
