May I ask which vehicle? From your profile, GL450?

What area of the car were you working on? Rear axle, or Front axle?

I'll take "why do I photograph every step of disassembly" for $1,000 Alex.
I know, not helpful for this go-round. Maybe for next time though.

Engine / Transmission removal and engine replacement.....

At the time I requested placement of the heat shields, I was pressed for time. I apologize. The vehicle is a 2007 E350 4matic wagon with 212K miles and it finally succumbed to the dreaded balance shaft issue. Rather than work the original engine, I decided to purchase a used engine with about 115K. I have a shop at my house with a two post lift, hydraulic transmission jack and an engine crane. Having all the necessary tools is the "bomb"! Really the only way to do a job like this. The W211 is a straight forward car with regard to how it is engineered and disassembly is pretty easy. The hardest issue in my opinion was installing the heat shields on the passenger side of the engine. Plus, three weeks had passed since I had removed the engine and transmission. First time for an engine swap on a W211. The 4matic system does add some additional work, but nothing thats a deal breaker. I had to swap the transfer case from the old engine to the new engine that did not have one. The best way I can sum up the work: If you have a rust free vehicle that has been properly maintained, I believe it's worth the effort to address a big drivetrain issue. You still have a great car and the personal satisfaction of knowing you did a good job. Just my two cents.

I hope you checked the serial number of the used engine, and you are 100% certain is from the "fixed series". Those engines seem to be bulletproof relative to their older siblings.
