Jumping Door lock

2009 E350 4matic wagon 135K mi.

My driver's side front door lock keeps jumping up and down when I try to lock or unlock the car. I have seen a few videos and comments out there on the subject and I guess it's a broken spring in the actuator. None of the info I have found is precisely for my car and none of it is detailed enough for my liking.

QUESTIONS:
Has anyone tackled this job and if so, are there any words of wisdom you can share?

Any good videos / resources you know of?

Also where did you get the part (spring) for this, assuming that is the problem and the fix?

Unscrew the door lock button and wrap some black electrical tape around it so it generates a bit of friction as it goes up and down. That'll be enough to keep it from jumping. You're welcome

I tried that one, but I didn't unscrew the knob I just taped it at the base while it was up. It only worked once in a while and the tape just started peeling back until it didn't work at all. Is that really what everyone does? Will that resistance over time break something else in there?

You have to unscrew it so the tape is around the base of the knob inside the door. If you do it right the tape won't be visible at all. It takes a bit of trial and error to have the right amount of tape in it. Yes this is the quick and dirty solution. Mine has been like this for 4 years. I've had to redo the tape a couple of times but it beats taking apart the door. Good luck.

Perhaps you can take a look at this (different platform same MB approach),

You can then use tape as a temporary workaround, and in the meantime study the video, evaluate your willingness to DIY, get the springs and proceed at your convenience.

Tape didn't help me at all, my spring was broken. You have two ways to go about this, change the whole mechanism or just the spring. The spring kit was around $10 on eBay and the whole actuator IIRC about $200. What you will definitely need is long Torx screwdrivers, the screws are pretty deep in.

The videos have got to be helpful. However, in the 1st video at 8:05 he says (with his accent), "oh my God, this is absolute nightmare... this is not easy repair". That does not instill within me the desire to do this job. I think I'll start with the tape done properly and if it doesn't work or if I get super bored this winter maybe then I'll start the job. I'll let you all know if I do the job and try to get some pics along the way.

Even one from the junkyard may be worn by now. However, if I were to do it I would first refurbish the one from the junkyard anyways with new springs before replacing the damaged one. Then, plenty of time to swap and no need to rush (the source of many mistakes) when replacing a part.
