High consumption on E320CDi
Hi people I am new to this forum. Need some advice. Here it goes:
I bought a 1 year old E320 CDi 2 weeks ago and used up a tankful of diesel and worked out that I did 17 mpg (!) for in town driving without driving hard. This is much lower than the quoted mpg or mpg's in other posts in this forum.
The car was purchased from an acquaintaince and only had 2000 miles on the clock. I know that the car was not driven at all for the last 4-5 months prior to me taking possession.
I called up the the Mercedes national helpline who suggested that the car needs to do some more miles and the consumption will improve. Still 17 mpg sounds very wrong to me.
I will be doing a few more tankfuls to get more accurate mpg and perhaps take the car in if it does not improve.
But does anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers

So are you really sure the tank was full when you started? If you didn't fill it yourself I wouldn't worry; if it was already a couple of gallons light then that would explain everything.

You simply cannot tell anything with one tank of fuel. Give it a few tanks and then average all of them. BTW, what is your trip computer telling you? It will be slightly high but not too much so.

Thank you people
100% sure the tank was full as I did it myself and I worked out the mpg on odometer and pump readings. But like you said Budc, I will wait for a few more tankfuls although I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
Or perhaps I am the only one who notes down everytime I fill up.

I had a brief spell of getting high 30's mpg but in generall I usually get around 27-32mpg. I tend to cover fairly mixed city/town/country. London is awfull, I sometimes get below 20mpg but on the motorways at a steady 86mph I can usually return around 34mpg which isn't bad. I always cruise at 86mph because it states in the manual that the car lowers itself at that speed (air-matic) and I do like the lower look, sad really at 33 yrs old
BTW I do have a heavy right foot and a bad attitude :v

Fuel consumption will vary a great deal. It is a pity you did not reset the computer when you purchased the car. That way you could have had an interesting indication of what the vehicle was achieving from day one of your ownership.
The manual is an excellent source of informatioin and I would recomend reading it whilst sat in the car (not whilst driving) so that you can 'play' with the different options.
Good luck with the car,
John
Still a very wet morning in Torquay

On second thoughts you had best read the manual whilst driving, or stuck in traffic. (better than watching a boring DVD

Take care and good luck with the mpg, (living in South London will explain why perhaps your figures are on the low side)
