Engine Noise

My W211 E320 CDI is coming up for 2 yrs old soon and I still have a very annoying noise coming from the engine. The noise is almost like a small hole in the manifold would sound and you can only hear it under say half load with the window down. It basically has a ticking/blowing noise and has been to the dealers twice about this problem. MB UK have spoken to me and have told me it is compression noise from No.1 cylinder. You can hear the noise because they reckon the engine block is thinner at the front than anywhere else and this detonation noise escapes throught he block.

I am fairly sceptical about this and was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem. I have also heard through another forum that it may be down to the cats breaking down when they get hot which could make sense as it only makes the noise when the engine has warmed up.

Any help/advice appreciated.

sometimes the noise can come from your rims.. i used to have echo noise when i had 18"s on, i first thought it was the engine but it was actually from front right rim.

just some thoughts

Hi Marcos,
To cut a very long story short I once owned a Mercedes-Benz with a terrible vibration. The dealership requested that an engineer come down from Mercedes-Benz UK and look at the engine.

The engineer attached his computer to the vehicle and I'm sure it must have told him the name of the miner that dug out the ore to make the engine!!! They can tell you the compression of each cylinder, exhaust pressures.. you name it the printout will show it.

Your car is still under warranty, providing that noise is there for them to hear, then it is down to them to rectify it.

Good luck, and if possible any chance of keeping us informed.

Regards,
John

Marcos;

Is it a "whoooshing" noise that is in tune with the rpms?, somewhat like a diesel engine (not a the knocking noise of a diesel, but the whoosh noise)?? does it whine down when you decelrate?

Let me know , i had that with my old 430 - they had to replace the top half of the engine. New Cams, valves and lifters.
