Update on my Radio issues

I have a 2003 E 320 with the HK Stereo but without Command. After running the car for a while and shutting off, when restarting the car I would intermittently get a black screen on the head unit or the stereo would just be locked up/frozen. Took the car in for software update last week; within an hour of leaving the service department, the radio locked up on restarting. I took the car back and was able to replicate the problem for them, and they were able to get some diagnostic codes.

The mechanic then replaced the audio gateway along with the updated software. They found that the new audio gateway did not solve the problem. They put the original audio gateway back in the car and replaced the head unit (Audio 50). This appears to have solved the problem. HOORAY! The head unit that was in the car was not the original head unit, as the original was replaced last year because sometimes it would not recognize CD's (it would have trouble with both originals and burned copies) and would sometimes have trouble ejecting CD's.

When I got my car back, the mechanic had forgotten to remove the software CD from the head unit. This is apparently the way they get the new code into the gateway. I did return the software CD when I returned and replicated the problem.

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal Friday about Daimler Chrysler. I feel like Daimler/Chrysler has put money and effort into Chrysler at the expense of MB.

This is true DC needed to revive Chrysler. MB has, all along, been a successful earner. This effort is almost behind them with Chrysler introducing a number of successful models. Attention will now be focused on bringing MB back to the glory days. Eckhard Cordes, recently chosen to head the MB division, has vowed to improve quality, performance, and customer satisfaction even at the cost of adding additional procedures to the assembly line production process. I understand he has personally driven competitor’s vehicles in order to get a true understanding of what needs to be done. Nice work if you can get it!
