Advice needed: Looking to buy a pre-FL wagon as a 3rd vehicle
Looking into potentially joining the w211 family with a wagon purchase soon!
I’ve been looking at midsize wagons (W211 and C6 A6) to use as a 3rd vehicle for occasional use as both my wife and I drive smaller cars and sometimes we need some extra practicality. I also love the look of a wagon…particularly the classic w211 vs the modern MB interiors and exteriors.
After doing some research, I’m prioritizing pre-FL w211s since they come with the M112 and M113 engines as well as the 5 speed. I’m not great at working on cars but want to learn and I’ve heard these engines are generally more reliable and easier to work on. SBC is a concern but I think the 25 year warranty is helping to alleviate some fears.
Currently considering this exact car if you guys are interested: https://www.midwestautosalesep.com/vehicles/WDBUH83J15X169082-2005-MercedesBenz-EClass-E500-4MATIC-WAGON/8D4D9F2A-2C3A-11EE-AA82-A76AF0F58EB5
I don’t love the aftermarket head unit but the dealer claims to have the original as well.
Would love to get your thoughts!
- is a pre-FL w211 a good idea?
- would you go post FL instead? Or maybe even C6 A6?
- I plan on doing some preventative maintenance myself and taking it to an Indy if issues arise…is maintenance generally easy, particularly for one who is less adept with a wrench?
Thank you!
