E320 CDI refuel from a can - what a mess!
Maybe a longer spout than "normal" is needed due to the configuration of the filler neck. Seems the diesel went in the filler neck about 6 inches then went into reverse!
Second "flap" in the filler neck or something?
The story is that several years ago, some moron was carelessly pouring gasoline into his lawnmower and the fuel can's unrestricted flow dumped onto the hot engine. A fire and injuries resulted, so a team of lawyers sued, bankrupted the fuel can company, and ventless fuel cans became the law of the land.
These new cans are designed so that fuel trickes out so slowly that it takes 20 minutes to pour 5 gallons, and fuel spills are common. I've retrofitted my fuel cans with conventional pour spouts and added vents to them, and they're now safe to use.
I had used the longer spout on the CDI in the past with no problems, then mistakenly used a can with the short one..........
On the E320 CDI (2006) there is a flap a few inches past the initial restrictor that the short spout didn't make it past...........UGH.
I also added some fuel rated tubing to the longer spout to make handling the can while pouring / staying clear of the bodywork easier.
Thanks for the bump........maybe someone else can learn from my messy mistake.

I don't know what to say...
Bought my red 5 gallon NATO style Jerry cans 15 - 20 years ago, but this looks like a really cheap copy from who knows where?

Some of us have mowers, chain saws, generators and the like, hence a need for quality fuel cans.
This thread originally was about refueling an E320 CDI from a "can" and the need for an appropriate spout for such - lesson learned.
Some of us also have fuel on hand for contingencies..........
