CEL E320 bluetec
Hey guys! I’m kindof at a loss here so after much debate I’ve decided to ask the internet. I bought an 2007 E320 Bluetec, the year right before blue def, about 6 months ago. The check engine light popped on for p0402 and excessive NOX in exhaust within the first month of ownership and began smelling like burning oil and steaming under the hood and smoking out back. There was no performance difference but obviously neither of those things are good. Being new to car ownership I figured it was out of my hands. Found out the PCV valve was leaking oil and supposedly the DPF was causing back pressure. Since then I’ve replaced the EGR valve and a few weeks ago had the DPF and PCV valve replaced by a Mercedes mechanic. I got the car back yesterday and the engine light is still on, though the smoking and steaming seems to have stopped. I’m looking for insight to any idea of what to check next or if I should just wait a few days to see if the system cleans itself and clears.
thankyou!

Most of the codes ended up being a huge crack in the intake. Replaced it and CEL went away. Called the mechanic after inspecting the DPF and turns out they didn’t replace it, annoying but I’m not too pressed. Having it replaced tomorrow.
I now have a code for P2199. Not getting any Mercedes specific codes on my scanner though. Thoughts?

Check under hood make sure all sensors are plugged in and the batwing properly aligned with filter boxes. Delete codes and reset all mean adaptations related to air intake, drive and observe

Haha not at all, each tool is slightly different and some might not have it, it can be buried sometimes. You have MB specific software right? What scan tool are you using

Update, got the DPF replaced, pulls a little harder, doesn’t seem to smoke(yet). Codes were off and then did a little pull and P0402 turned back on. Assuming it has to do with the intake again. I see a tiny oil leak around the PCV seal, what are the chances that the turbo is yanking air from around that seal into the engine?

That is possible to be leaking air there but also on the batwing to airbox sides. I’m not sure what the proper way is but I put my hose clamps as tight as possible without breaking the plastic and fit it to turbo first.
From vague memory I believe p0402 is an egr related code. I had it show up after replacing the dpf too, I just deleted it and reset adaptations and initializing dpf which tells the car you have a new one in. It didn’t come back but you can check under the b28 back pressure sensor and egr passages for excessive soot or a blockage and clean it out.
first confirm what that code is though

When I initially replaced the batwing last week the code turned off. Code back now, car runs way better with new DPF but I’m looking to sell the car soon and it obviously takes value down with a CEL. I’ll double check the batwing when I get the chance. I might just replace the PCV to batwing seal and the batwing to turbo seal. I replaced the EGR 4 or so months ago but it might be a good idea to take it out and clean it since I was running it with a clogged dpf?

It is likely just the computer confused by the sudden increase in flow with new dpf compared to previously. That’s why I keep saying to reset values etc…, this code you can delete and see if it comes back as something different or even at all. Another option is just drive it and see if it adapts or goes away.
yeah it can get debris/soot in the ports/sensor as you guessed

Betterdaze, I appreciate all the help. I contacted the mechanic and asked if they reset the values as you stated and they said that they had. I’ve cleared the code a few times and it comes back each time(I’ve driven it 4-5 hours since I’ve gotten it back)It smells rather rich aswell. A friend and I are going to clean the EGR valve, EGR hose, pull apart the intake and put it back together with a new turbo intake seal. I’ll update you when we finish.

There are a few resets to do technically, one is for the mean values(temp, pressure sensors etc) one for the dpf and it’s sensors and the other is for the MAF and intake itself on my scanner it is called HFM, if you get a code immediately from flooring it then you might need to reset the MAF/intske sensors that’s what’s reading the air
You’re welcome and good luck with the cleaning , I went through this with my car(2008 e320) a couple years ago but it has been mostly solid since.

See I have a scanner that can manually regen, but I don’t see a reset value function. I almost think it smokes again on my drive today but I’ll update after I get home from the gym.

I attached a super short video of a hissing noise I hear. Does your 08 do this?
Anyways, I’m going to do some of the things you’ve suggested as you seem to know a lot more about it than I do. I appreciate all the help and I’ll be back when I’ve tried it and it works/doesn’t work.
the drive back was smoke free but she did stink a little more than she should.

Where exactly is the smoke coming from? There will always be a slight diesel smell but it’s shouldn’t be strong from in the car
That sounds like a loose clamp or weld creating exhaust leak near dpf. Mine doesn’t hiss at all
I’m not a mechanic but can help from firsthand experience with my 08, it is a somewhat rare car and most shops will not know what to do but still charging you for it.

The smoke was coming from the back and from down by the DPF under the hood. The replaced the DPF and showed me how awful the welds were from the previous owner. It hasn’t smoked since the replacement.

My dpf was bolted on. I wouldn’t mess with anything else except cleaning egr and pressure sensors.
just drive and keep monitoring the codes. My car did throw a code to tell me the injectors were overfueling from past dpf clog. I reset them too and the code never came back. It could be running a little rich after trying to burn off the old dpf which isn’t there anymore
