Steering Binds
Greetings All,
I am struggling to find a solution for a steering problem on my 2009 w211 e350 sport package. The sticky steering or binding only happens in the mornings or at every cold start, once the car warms up the steering becomes smooth again. The dealer has replaced the steering column shaft with clock spring claiming that is what’s causing the binding. That didn’t work. Then indy mechanic and the dealer said it has to be the rack and pinion. Indy mechanic replaced the rack. That didn’t work either. So now I’m $3,500 in and still stuck with the same problem. Please advise weather the dealership could have replaced the steering column shaft or the indy mechanic possibly replaced the steering rack and pinion wrong or with a defective rack or they were both wrong and the binding is caused by something else? Thank you.

It's likely bad ball joints or a bent control arm. Take it to an alignment shop. Also wide low profile tires add to the friction in the system. It doesn't have good self centering.
