What exactly does voice response do?

On our BMW it had some phone and nav functions. The dealer forgot to install it originally and we just got it back today.

It has some radio and phone commands. Saying "navigation" brings up a map. However there are no navigation commands. And no sat radio commands (and we really ONLY use the sat radio now).

Is this correct or do I have an installation problem?

Thanks,

David

David: You are correct. The VCS gives you global commands to switch between functions. There are also local commands to change radio stations and cd tracks. The most extensive local commands involve the phone. The dealer should have given you a manual of the various commands. If not, let me know; I have a soft copy.

It was installed by the service department...who didn't leave a manual.

A soft copy would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Many months ago 'Oslo' very kindly typed a very full list of the commands for the Liguatronic.

Once again it sounds like the US has a VERY restricted version of an excellent options.

A search will find this very informative message.

John

You can set the comand up so that in every application that has voice commands, pulling back on the voice stalk will 1st display "Application", and when you say "telephone" for instance and pull the stalk again, a list of available commands will appear on the screen.

It IS NOT necessary to switch to the phone application from the Sat app, to make a call. While you are in Sat, simply pull back & say "Dial Name" & it will ask for the name. Since Sat is a US only item, there is as yet, no voice command to switch back to NAV when you are done with the call. There are voice commands to return to the other world wide apps which are built in.

I believe you can also say Help and will be given a list of commands... or was that my Caddy...

Voice is a neat command item, as you can dictate a phone number to dial, ("Dial Number") in groups, just like you would say it, for instance, say: Dial Number... <What number?> 0516 ... 555... 1234... dial, & out it goes!

The full European version certainly is, but no doubt your US dealer will say no.

This is the reply I received from a very reputable English company.

"""Linguatronic as a retrofit costs £690 + VAT. We need your car for one day and require 7-10 days notice. We would need the chassis number of your car to process the order to be sure that the correct parts of the right colour are ordered.

The finished product is ‘identical’ to that of a factory fitted system."""

When I made the enquiry I stated that my vehicle already had the hands free telephone option installed.

John

This is what 'Oslo' very kindly posted. All credit must rightfully go to him for taking the time to type such a long list.

Here is the complete list of commands to use on the Linguatronic Voice Control. For ease of operation, some functions may be performed with several voice commands. These are shown in groups in the list which are separated by an empty line. You can choose which one you wish to use.

For a car with a phone fitted that is an excessive price. In the US the car is already fitted with the VCS control switch, just the stalk is missing.

In the rear it is a swap of the voice control module with the VCS module and the job is done.

It takes 2 hours to fit and costs nothing like the price stated for any W211 with a phone.

Hi Miro,
I totally agree and you have very kindly sent me the relevant pgf files and part numbers.

I posted this just to prove that Linguatronic can indeed be retro-fitted. As you know, when I asked my dealer if it could be done: I got the standard 'No' this option cannot be retro-fitted.

Thanks again for all the help and assistance,
John

For a car without a phone (if such a car exists) then it is somewhat more involved. Possibly not worth doing.

So if I understand you correctly.....If I already have the phone system...and I want the Euro voice control... all I have to do is change out the US voice control module with a Euro one?

That seems pretty easy

I think you will find it is physically possible but firmware is not compatible.

Do you know if you have to have the phone in order to retrofit a voice command unit and have it work properly with the rest of the COMAND and NAV?

Voice control is 1/2 of the phone system (microphone setup) and it may operation without the phone installation.

If you do proceed in the future with a phone installation then the microphone setup stays connected to the voice control circuit.

HOWEVER ...... if you drive a W211 then the whole thing is turned on its head.

It would be an extremely expensive job. The telephone set-up has the 'concealed' microphones fitted.

Good luck,
John
