04 E320 Road Noise with Michellin Energy MXV4+

I am experiencing quite a bit of road noise coming from the wheel well and tires when the car is on the highway...Is this normal for for 04/05 E320s? If the highway is newly paved, no issues....but in most highways - lots of road noise? Is there anything that can be done to reduce it? Has anyone have the same experiences as I do?

I have that combination and on a very long vacation over all kinds of roads in the US I noticed far more road noise than I ever did with my 300E and V-rated Continentals or Pirelli P6000's. I think it's both the MXV4's and the E320.

I agree, to a certain extent it is both the vehicle & tires. I’m thinking Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (max performance summer for AZ driving) when it’s time to replace the Michelins.

I don't like tires made in clamshell molds. I like European tires that are made in steel segmented molds.

Has anyone noticed that the only American or Japanese tires made in steel segmented molds are racing tires.

I do agree that when you are loaded down and headed for Vegas in 116 degree heat, the higher the speed rating the better

Excellent choice, IMHO.

Had a set on our BMW 528i and liked them. Quiet, mucho grip and phenomenal wet weather performance. They even ride decently. The one downside is they don't steer as crisply as the OEM Michelin Pilots that came on our BMW, but they're not bad either.

I've contemplated dumping the OEM Michelins on our CDI for a set of those. Goodyear offers a $75 rebate on them currently .

There has been a lot of threads and posts about highway noise and tires. One of the worst is the Conti CH95 which is the stock tire on most E500's and maybe some E320's.

Check out the comparison charts at the Tire Rack site above as it gives noise ratings.

Search on this forum for Tires Highway Noise and you should turn up some very good threads on the subject.

Go to the MBWorld Tire forum for some good threads.

I noticed this too with my current Mich's. It has a lot to do with the tires. I had an '02 525i before and decided to go the cheap route with tires (Kumho). They were great at first but once they started to wear it was crazy how loud they became. Definitely factor in road noise and wear in your buying decision for your next purchase!
