Broken down in France - any ideas?

Broken down in France - any ideas?
As the title I am broken down in France with my 2006 E320CDI estate on 140K miles. It is the facelift V6
I have had it for 2 years and it has been trouble free and provided superb service.
Yesterday in a small village in France we stopped to give way and the car stalled and would not restart.
On getting out of the car there was a lake of diesel at the rear of the car (the front /engine dry) and much dripping of diesel around the rear passenger wheel arch. Obviously obscured by the under covers.
any ideas what might have happened?
have had the car recovered to a garage in a town not far from us but they won’t get chance to investigate till Monday. And I don’t know whether they know anything about MB either!
any help would be much appreciated!

I have traveled many times in rural France. My advice is (1) find a small hotel, (2) enjoy a wonderful French dinner, (3) order a bottle of Bordeaux. Some of us wish to be so lucky as to be "broken down in France"!
