Gear selector feels sloppy suddenly and wont go into gear.

Question Gear selector feels sloppy suddenly and wont go into gear.
My gear selector on my W211 E63 AMG wont make the car go into gear. It moves to each gate but it feels sloppy while doing so. I have taken the boot off and I'm not seeing anything unplugged or wrong. Unsure of what is causing this wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing and on how to fix it.

It ended up being the C clip holding the gear shifter on to the transmission. Got very lucky as the clip fell out of the car after I got home.
