I had this happen recently on a 2004 E500. That whole panel was inoperative: nothing worked!
I pulled the panel out, and the main connector was not connected.
Not sure why it suddenly happened, but the car had been at the shop for some work, and maybe they pulled the panel and forgot to reattach the plug? Not sure. Was very weird.
I watched a Youtube video and the whole process didn't take that long.
The toughest part was that the cable is very short, and it was a bit difficult to attach the cable to the back of the unit but it did work.
