thinking about buying an 05 E500...

just curious if there are any known problems with the car or also, the dealer has a couple 04's and mentioned free maintenance, is there any other reason to go with an 04?

I'd be interested in doing some minor modifications, is there engine management that could get some more power out of the car? And what are some companies other than the obvious AMG that tune mercedes benz? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!!!! A quick search will give you pleanty of info about any problems the earlier models had... For the most part most all bugs were gone by the early 04 models and most importantly the "decontenting" hadn't begun yet (do a search under "decontenting" for more info). I'd say go for a mid year produced 04 (feb and later as verified in the drivers door jamb). Most of these cars have very little problems if any, and have the decontented items that the 05 don't have (puddle lights, rest feature, free maintenance, butterfly style console, etc). You should be able to get yourself a great deal (price wise) on an 04 too.... Most here tend to leave engines in their cars alone, but there are a few that will chip and change a few things to squeeze out a few more ponies. There are several companies that have products and some are sponsers here as well. Good luck.
B.T.W.... I love my car and would recommend the e500 to anyone.

thanks for the response, good info. I think I will look into the few 04's still left on the lot, sounds like those are some cool things to have as well as free maintenance. I'll try working on the search too

The 2004 is well worth it. It has the old but better Center Console, free maintenance, and it will likely be cheaper too than the 2005. FWIW 04' is the only way to go since your dealer still has a few left. Just make sure it has xenon lights, and the HK sound system.

Yup, the HK sound system & Bi Xenons are worth it. I think the Bi Xenons are the best headlight system I have ever driven with! Let us know if the New '04s you see on dealer's lots are well equipped or less equipped. It would be interesting to see. In my personal experience in Long Island, most of the stock vehicles on dealers lots all model year were not well optioned up vehicles. (possibly to keep the prices competitive?)

without a doubt go with 04. like everyone said already, pick one with bi-xeon and HK.

Also, make sure you are getting a late 04, as with bi-xeon you also get active head light which was not available on early 04 cars.

I think the largest benefit with the 2004 over options would be the center console and the free maintenance. The center console in those 2005 models is simply horrible.

great information, thanks. Gonna call them up tomorrow and see what options the 04's have on them. One is the color i want, pewter, so hopefully it has the headlights and i kinda like the keyless entry . I think any car can get the HK sound system installed from the dealer right?

I don't think so.... I believe this is a factory installed option and well worth the extra $$$$$.

2005 E320 4Matic
A 2004 model has some some distinguishing features people like in this forum and is cheaper than a 2005 model. I had the same problem when shopping for a E320 4matic during past summer. However, the dealer could not locate a single 2004 model in the whole U.S. (due mostly to 4matic option), because of the exterior/interior color combinations and various options that I definitely wanted. I ended up ordering a 2005 model from scratch and am quite happy with the product so far. My personal opinion is that a cost saving due to free maintenance should not be a decisive issue since you surely can afford one without; and hence it should not deter you buying a more up-to-date model, if you want that is.

update- got a silver 04 with NAV, Sirius and some other fairly standard options, can't remember right now . I know i didn't get the sound system. However, I got a pretty good deal on both the car and the trade in on my 2000 A6 2.7t, so it was worth it to me. Pick it up on friday and can't wait!
