W211 Mercedes as a first car – good idea? Handling in winter/rain

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into getting a Mercedes W211 (E-Class, 2002–2009) as my first car, and I’d like to hear some experienced opinions before making the jump.

A few questions and concerns:
  1. Beginner suitability:
    • Is the W211 manageable for a new driver in terms of size, weight, and power delivery?
    • I know some models come with larger engines and more torque—would this make it harder for a first-time driver to handle safely compared to smaller cars?
  2. Driving in poor weather:
    • How does the W211 behave in winter conditions (snow, ice) or heavy rain?
    • Is the RWD layout (on most models) a problem for inexperienced drivers, or does the ESP/traction control system make it forgiving enough?
  3. Engines & mileage concerns:
    • I’m currently considering between the 2.2 CDI (OM646) and the 2.7 CDI (OM647). From what I’ve read, both are fairly reliable diesels, but I’m worried about the high mileages these cars usually come with.
    • Are these engines still a safe bet when they’re past 400 km, provided service history is solid? Or should a first-time buyer avoid such high-mile cars?
    • Any major differences between the 2.2 and 2.7 in terms of real-world reliability, running costs, or suitability for a new driver?
  4. Maintenance & reliability:
    • I’ve read about common issues with the SBC braking system and rust on earlier models. Are these still major concerns today, or mostly solved with newer model years/facelifts?
    • What are the typical running costs like compared to other cars in this segment?
    • I also heard that many W211 owners use a Chinese Launch diagnostic tool for coding and maintenance. Is it reliable enough for home use, or should I be looking at something else?
    • On the topic of brakes: is it possible to safely change brake pads without deactivating the SBC pump, or is that too risky and best avoided without proper diagnostic tools?
  5. Retrofitting options:
    • How easy (or difficult) is it to retrofit modern comforts into a W211, like heated seats, upgraded COMAND, memory seats, ventilated etc?
    • Are these plug-and-play with OEM parts, or would it involve heavy wiring/coding?
    • And if anyone here has wiring diagrams, retrofit guides, or tutorials saved for these kinds of upgrades, I’d really appreciate if you could share them.
Budget context:
My budget is around $5,000 USD, which means I’ll mostly be looking at higher-mileage examples. Do you think that’s realistic for finding a reliable W211, or would I be better off looking at something else in this price range?

Basically, I’m trying to balance comfort, safety, and learning curve. I don’t want something that will be unsafe in the winter or cost a fortune to maintain, but I also like the idea of driving something solid and well-built.

Any advice from people who’ve driven/owned a W211—especially in winter climates—would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!
