I see they have even fitted it into the C class.
Brilliant sounding specifications.

I hate to say it Fastbuck, but..... I personally think the CLS is one of the worst designed cars that has come out of Mercedes-Benz for a very long time. (I am not including the 'little' A and Smart in this statement)
Sorry to be a Killjoy,

Glad I have the I-6 version...
The "straight six" design, has across brands and throughout automotive history, proven itself as one of the most durable, long-lived engine designs of all time.
The Ford 300 I6, the legendary Mopar "Slant-Six", the Toyota Landcruiser straight six, BMW diesels, almost all Big Rigs and Busses, etc.
The straight six design is naturally balanced, no counterweights required.
The V6 design almost universally requires counter-rotating balance shafts, and in the long run, in my opinion, a V6 is the WORST type of engine in terms of longevity and the possibility of catastrophic failures.
Only disadvantage would be 15-20 years out, if you need an I-6 motor for a 2005 E320 CDI in the United States, there won't be a whole lot of them in the junkyard because they will be orphans, only imported for 1 year, total imported will be 5,000 (up from initial 3,000 allotment).
Get your CDI now, with a proven engine, don't be a "beta test" guinea pig.

I love this board. I am always amazed with the intelligence possessed by all of you. As for the Inline 6 v. the V6 I have heard in the past that the inline does better with age and has been proven over many years. The BMW I6 is legendary and I hope that my CDI 6 has the same track record.

Even my dealer tells me to keep it
Not only does the the 2005 E320 CDI have a more durable engine design than the upcoming V6 diesel, it also comes with the superior center console. Even my dealer is telling me never to sell this car.
I thought the car companies wanted to innovate so we would be compelled to buy new cars not keep our old ones?

I know about I 6s a lot, but I would have to say that MB must know what they are talking about and doing.
I had the 300E and had the typical head gaskets and other inherit problems linked with that design. The V 6 E320 that has been out since 1998 has been bulletproof!! Except for the oil issue, people using the FSS with organic oil. But even then, the V6 never failed, it was very solid.
I personally like the smoothness of the I6, but I like the V6 too. I know that I am talking about gasoline engines, but V6 versus I6 is the same in both gasoline and diesel.
I doubt that anyone will contradict me when I say that the E320 V6 is and has been much more reliable than the I6 300 or the I6 320. Only time will tell is the I6 3.2 CDI will be more solid than the V6 3.0 CDI. In the end, time and miles will tell the true story.
Just remember that a 4 cylinder and a V8 are like a V6 in the sense that they are not balanced either. Yet, I 4s and V 8s are very durable too, if they are correctly designed.
Also, one of the most bullet-proof I 6 motors ever was the Checker taxi! They were very strong!
