ESP works!?

While turning in to the entrance at my hardware store, I hit a patch of black ice and felt the car start to fishtail...I did nothing and all of a sudden I felt the car steer itself straight instead of ending up at an angle...is this ESP at work?

I am not sure about that although it worked with me a few weeks ago.

I was accelerating and hit a railway / streetcar track that was wet and I the wheels started to spin, the ESP light came on and all power that I was applying went away, it felt like the car was stalling, it actually just stopped the excess power to the wheels. It worked great and as soon as it was over it kept the power back to the wheels.

It used to be that the warning triangle only turned on when the ESP was working or when the 4 matic was activated (in the old early 90s Es). On this car, it turns on when the ABS, ESP and the 4 ETS (in my 4 Matic) activates. So it is hard to say that is was the ESP.

However, if you were coming to a turn and you said that the car was fishtailing, then it was most likely the ESP. I always test the way the ESP works whenever I have a chance. I also notice that the 4 ETS (or traction control) also takes the power away from the gas pedal and eliminates the excess throttle so that the car is not fighting itself.

Overall, I think that ESP is an absolute MUST HAVE!!!!! No if, ands, or buts! All my cars from now on will have it!

I have traveled thousands of miles in poor conditions with this system and it really does work well. This past weekend I was on heavy ice and snow and I felt the system frequently kicking in to keep the car going in the intended direction. There were dozens of cars in ditches and the E forged ahead. Very impressive! On a sad note, I saw a previous generation E class and a couple Jag's in ditches as I hate to see luxury cars in trouble...
