Passenger Airbag Warning

When my 2004 E500 is running and the passenger gets in our out, I get a warning message on my speedo display - something like "Passenger Airbag Deactivated - See Owner's Manual." This remains as a "malfunction" in the menu until I restart the car.

Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong?

It's not normal.

I should add...

...that when a passenger gets back in, the warning says "Passenger airbag activated. See owner's maunual."

So it seems that the airbag is activated and deactivated when it should be, but why the message?
