yes, some Taxis in Germany are Mercedes S-Classes as well.
But i think 95 % of all Taxis in Germany are Mercedes E-Classes.
I think a Mercedes E-Class is a nice car, but it´s not luxury. The Mercedes S-Class, a new Porsche, an Audi A8, a BMW 7er - is a luxury car.
Greetings merc

German E-Class Taxi are the 'Classic' models with cloth seats, 4 bangers, etc. and not the 'Elegance' nor 'Avantgarde' versions. The US gets a equivalent to the Avantgarde model (I believe). That pic has a sunroof and I can not see a taxi driver opting for a sunroof on a taxi.

I've been in many a E-class Taxi, in both Germany, France and Switzerland.
They use all model lines from Classic to Advangard, and one E-class taxi I was in even had full DVD nav system and intergrated TV in the front!
Over 60% of the taxi's are full leather as the cloth wears to quickly.
What i'm saying is the taxi's are not basic spec E-classes.

We also have C-class and S-class taxis but they are more rare. Still have to ride in a lovely CL-taxi though

where do these taxi drivers get the money for an E class or S class?
are riding taxi's in Germany much more expensive than other countries? or are their MB's generally much much cheaper?
or do the Taxi community supply their cars?
cos from what i observe in Hong Kong and Canada, an average taxi driver does not make enough to buy an E class or S class...(no offense though)

i always did wonder that myself.. how are MB's priced compared to other imported brands. Are they high or less? just wondering because in my mind, I would think that MB's in germany are like toyota's in japan.. which is why everyone is buying MB's in germany.. coz it's cheap...
cluelessly yours.

German workers - including taxi drivers - are on average among the highest paid in the world and enjoy generous social welfare and unemployment benefits.
Cost of a MB car is about the same in Germany as in the USA. Gas is 3X as much; that is why economical diesel engines are so popular in Europe.

The cost of a German E-Class Taxi's are not comparable to the US models. The majority of these taxi's are the low end models which are not available in the US or Canada.
You guys keep forgeting the 'they' can buy models such as an E230 with a 2.3 liter 4 banger, or W211 E220 4 banger diesel with cloth seats, steel wheels, plastic hub caps, no sunroof, no wood and no other luxuries appointed.
There is a guy near my office (Arlington,VA) driving a W210 E230 like this with right hand-drive setup.

The Basic Modell of the new E-Class has Wood and Mercedes-Benz Audio 10 radio/cassette with 10 speakers like here:
Alloy wheels:
The equipment is different between diffrent countries, but in Germany you have to pay for a sunroof in a E 200 CDI (diesel) and in a E 500.
And now the prices for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 in Classic (basic Equipment)
E 240 -- 36'888 Euro = 34'654.1 US Dollar
E 320 -- 43'500 Euro = 40'865.6 US Dollar
E 500 -- 56'492 Euro = 53'070.8 US Dollar (Elegance, no Classic for E 500)
E 220 CDI -- 35'264 Euro = 33'128.4 US Dollar
E 270 CDI -- 37'584 Euro = 35'307.9 US Dollar

This would be excellent, however the conversion isnt a direct one wia currency rates. There is a "premium" for option packages that come to the US versus the a la carte options in Europe.
The lase E 320 Elegance converted to about $40k while it actually sold in the US for about $49k. Oh well....

Since Mercedes sells a lot of E-Class Taxis I bet they have a 'specific' stripped down Taxi only version which would not be listed in sales brouchures, consumer catalogs or the regular consumer website. This model would probably be deplete of the leather, wood, sunroof, etc. which is available in the E220 consumer version.

DtS, Thanks - you just proved my point! There is a Taxi version, package or 'option' available. This Taxi Package is not listed on the consumer website as an option nor available in the U.S.
In Europe/Germany you can order the cars anyway you want - but in the U.S. you can not. The debate, curiousity and disbelief here in the U.S. is most people think that a German Mercedes Taxi is the same luxury cars as we have here. The US only gets the Luxury models and none with 4 cylinders, or cloth seats or without sunroofs, etc.
Most U.S. people do not know that there are lower priced/stripped down versions or Mercedes with cloth seats. So when they see or here of a E-Class taxi they think it is a $50k plus luxury vehicle being used as a taxi - when in fact they are mostly stripped down lower end vesions of E-Class. We only get Avantgarde version of the E320/E430 and the E55. So you would never (rarely) find a current model Mecedes Taxi in the U.S.
A E230 Taxi with 4 cylinder, cloth seats, no roof, no wood is not a luxury car - it is just a mid-size sedan like a Ford Taurus.

99% of the MB taxi's are diesel with auto transmission. Usually E220 CDI or E270 CDI.
Infact they actually offer in Europe a special 'Taxi' diesel engine which has slightly lower HP, but more torque than regular E-class.
However, the comments about 'stripped out' versions, you will find many E-Class Taxi with diesel engines but still have sun roof, heated electric seats, climate control and always MB-tex, sometimes leather. Also, some have DVD for when the driver is waiting for pick-ups
At an estimate, I would say the standard MB Taxi package, E270 CDI, is roughly the same price as a regular E320 V6. However, these big taxi firms no doubt get hefty discounts due to the number of vehicles they buy.

The Taurus model range: $18,514 to $21,684. What a bargain!
