Next Navteq USA Nav DVD Due Out in March

They said it should be called "2005.1". They also said If I subscribe to a Nav-Up subscription & pay now, the 1st update available for me would be maybe Fall 05 (if there is one) or Spring '06, since the '05 Disc is so close to its distribution date & will be distributed thru the dealers parts department only.

So:
A) Do they really think I will let them charge me for a subscription & not get anything for my money for over a year, giving them an interest free loan, considering that I am still pretty happy with the disc which was in the car at its Dec '03 delivery date to me? There really is No point in a 3 year subscription if an 18 month old disc is still pretty OK to use, and I can pick up the new one at the dealer & use it for another 18 months! (See, 18+18=36 months or 3 years) ..and then maybe 1 more disc, or a new car...

B) Somebody in the Dealership end who posts here, please post when the 2005.1 Nav Disc becomes available!

I'm picking up my car on March 1st. I wonder which disk I'll get. Since it is a US spec car and I live in Europe, I have to buy the European Disk(s) which cost over 400 Euro. (I get the US DVD...just won't use them for 2 years) Can these disks be backed up or "burned" incase they get damaged. I'd hate to be out over $500. Also, a friend of mine is leaving Germany soon and has offered to sell me his DVD. He has an 05 E320, I'm getting an 06 E350...would his DVD work in my system? What is a fair price to pay him...I was thinking half of retail.

Well, taking a drive to Boston yesterday proves that I need an update!! I thought my NAV was going to explode!!! All kinds of construction, new roads (the "dig" I guess), roads in the wrong place LOL it was amazing. And the construction, God I thought NYC was bad.

I may go ahead and buy this update too. Besides the fact that my nav is currently out of service, I have seen many errors. The only thing that I object too is having to pay for what are mainly errors on Navteq's side, and not new additions, or changes because the road changed.

The Europa version 4 (current) is selling on ebay for £30 - £50.

I just picked up a 2005.1 DVD disc from my dealer last week. $275 in Los Angeles. But i finally got to use a 15% coupon that they gave me in 2003 for getting the car. So yeah, it's available.

And on a whim, I put it in my PC and noticed that it only uses up less than 2gigabytes. Will test this weekend if it can be "backed up" and used in the Nav unit in the trunk.

I am pretty sure it can be backed up. Have heard of people using backed up copies without problems.

2gig would be cool, that means the cheap DVD5 medias would work. The Denso nav in Toyota/Lexus uses DVD9 discs to hold 7+ gigs of data. Even with those people have been successful backing them up with dual layered medias.

$275 is a pretty good price. Would you mind sharing the dealership name?

I just picked up my Nav DVD. It is labeled:
MBUSA DVD Pkg., 2005-2
MBUSA part # BQ6460206 V.2

It came with a little Post-It Note on the CD Warning you to insert it into the trunk mounted DVD, not the single slot in the COMMAND unit.

When you start the car & pres NAV you get a screen which indicates that an update of some sort is occuring, displaying 2 "thermometer" type guages to let you see the update progress. Then the unit shuts down & reboots. (What its updating, I don't know... upon reboot, Mine started playing the single slot CD at track 1 even though I had been listening to satellite radio before the new Nav Disc was inserted in the trunk unit.) All seems OK now. .. I don't notice anything different though. $ 275.00

I will say that the delivery DVD that came out of the unit was pretty dirty with swirls on it of dust. (It rotates somewhat as it come out of the drive.) I'll remove this one & clean it 2 or 3 times this year, although I doubt it will run any better/faster.

Go to Boston like I did the other day and see if it will get you around LOL. Mine had me making u-turns in the tunnel, making turns where there were no roads. It was unreal.

Don't forget... many of the roads around the "Big Dig" Changed daily & traffic patterns changed more rapidly than that. All those roads & bridges are NEW. Next years disc will be right for the next few years! Unless they have to close roads & tunnels due to leaks!

Tonight I'm gonna see if they corrected the spelling of my 4 block street name. I called the misspelling to their attention in an e-mail to them & they responded that it could be spelled either way (which is rediculous, since the street name is a contraction of the 2 partners who built all the houses on the block & then named the street after themselves!! The street's name is otherwise a nonsensical name, and not a real name.)

It'll be only nav data.
Software updates are another CD all together.

That's how it is on my BMW and they use Navteq as well.

[QUOTE=ricky.agrawal]It'll be only nav data.
Software updates are another CD all together.

I need a new DVD with streets but would also like details on any software updates for the display if available. (Bird's eye view, advance turn info on COMAND screen, etc.)

I use a Magellan RoadMate 700 in several of my other vehicles and they have updates of both the display software and the streets, POI's, etc for a nominal fee for internet download. I find the Magellan display FAR more user friendly and up to date than my MB Nav system. I even use this same system when I travel in rental cars throughout the Continental US. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Hawaii but they don't have that many roads there anyway. For the first 18 months, I got free softward and map updates from Magellan.

In my opinion, MB is RIPPING us off by charging as much as they do for the updates of the map info. It would build great customer loyalty if they were to give us these updaate discs for free and show they REALLY care about wanting to be the best Car Dealer in the world. I've told them this in surveys but maybe if we all do, it will have some impact.

By the way, I'm happy my COMAND system (2003 Nav replacement) wiill play DVD's and appreciate their action to finally get us NAV systems by giving us replacement vehicles. Now, all they have to do is give us the free updates to secure me as a customer for life.

Here's what I learned about the current version of NAV DVD for 05 E 500. The current version is 2005.3. I picked it up today at my dealer. According to MB Nav Disk people, the next will be 2006.1 due out in December. Sadly, no change to the user interface is known to be in the pipeline, but if enough complaints are received, who knows. I registered my dissatisfaction with the customer relations people in Jersey.

My original post on this thread is very old & got bumped up so it appears as a new/current post. It is not.

BTW, I called Navteq today to ask about a subscription, which they used to sell for much less than buying the DVDs from MB parts department. They (Navteq) no longer sell subscriptions. They said we have to buy from MB dealerships now.

Warning

I thought it only polite to point out this is an old thread before I ask my question.

I note you contacted Navteq to see if it is possibe to take out an update subscription and were told to contact Mercedes-Benz.

By coincidence that is just what I did last year and no doubt we both got the same response

Has this situation changed, can you get a yearly subscription from Mercedes-Benz?

In the UK we have been discussing this issue for some time as the cost of update disc's are rediculous.

By the way the latest UK update has activated TMC and Dynamic routeing.

Thanks for any update,
John

Following is the informaiton off of MB Owners Online:

Subscribing to Mercedes-Benz Navigation Updates (NavUpdate)
The only navigation subscription program available from an automotive manufacturer, NavUpdate allows you to update your DVD/CD navigation system regularly, at substantial savings over single DVD/CD purchases.

Why Update the Map?
It's estimated that 15 to 20 percent of the data in your navigation DVD/CD changes every year, so it's important to keep the information up-to-date. By subscribing to updated DVD/CDs you'll always have the confidence you need to find your way.

Navigation Update Subscription: an excellent value

Hi Barry
It will be interesting to see what MBUK has to say over this issue. Our upgrade DVD's retail at considerably higher prices than the US versions, so any reduction is a bonus.

Have you taken out a subscription?

John
