Trunk double locking / valet key / green open button . . .

After chatting with BudC about the valet key of out W211s I checked out the trunk lock of my car and, as Bud said, you cannot double lock the trunk anymore! By this I mean that you cannot lock the trunk and make NOT be a slave to the door locks. This makes the glove box the only compartment that can be locked and not accessed with the valet key.

Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the green button on the inside of the trunk lid? Maybe, if the trunk is double locked, the button will not work. Is this trunk release butting in the European sedans? If it is, can you still double lock the trunk?

I am interested in ordering the correct European trunk lock mechanism and have it keyed to my current key. Has anyone done this? I am not overly concerned about disabling the green trunk release button in the trunk since I will not be double locking the trunk that often and I have the rear seat pass through and I could always open that in case of emergency.

Any info would be great!

Steve

This topic has been kicked around a few times, most recently last fall ...

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w211/80553-trunk-lock.html

... and the assumption then was that the federal requirement of an inside trunk release conflicted with a mechanical lock that couldn't be opened from inside the trunk - thus "valet key" locking of the trunk had to go. I don't recall anyone citing a specific ban on mechanical trunk locks, though. Don't recall anyone talking about going the European lock route.

Thank you for the link DWP! I did not search under that exact wording of course.

I wonder then if anyone has been able to get this resolved for good. My understanding then is the early 04 and 03 cars still have the green trunk opening button inside and also can double lock the trunk. However, that is discontinued and the parts to retrofit this are not available???

I guess this is just another thing to ponder. I only double lock the trunk when I got on long road trips. I sure liked the extra safety.

Might be more good info for you to peruse. We did cover the aspect of ordering a European trunk lock keyed in the proper manner. That order would probably not go through a US dealership. You might have better luck ordering an unkeyed lock (ES2:9999) and rekey it for yours.

Thank you very much for this! I have to compile some more information and see exactly if the juice is worth the squeezing on this one. They way I see it, even if I cause the Soprano release to be non-functional when I double lock the trunk, I (one) could still release the rear seats from the trunk.

So just to bother you once more Scorchie, is this part number (ES2:9999) the part number I could order in Europe? Do you know if this key system will allow the system to do what we all want (double lock the trunk)? If it does, then that sounds as simple as just having it keyed to my key and changing the lock. Could this be?

Thanks again,

Steve

Looks like we should buy BMW's. They still have the Valet key as well as the wallet key and they have four years of full service. They also have many amenities that Mercedes have taken out of the W211. If Bangel hadn't messed up the 5'er, I'd be driving a 545I.
