The "Bluetecs" refer to MB's "Bluetec" diesel engine. It's been around for years but MB did not include it at the launch of the new E350 although it is mentioned in the brochure. I expect that it is delayed getting here so that MB can burn through their inventory of 2010 vehicles and make it a succinct 2011 offering.
You get higher MPG (30s) and a good deal of added torque so diesels make for more spirited driving than the standard 6-cylinder E350 gas engine. Historically, pricing of the E Class Bluetec is a few hundred less than the 4-Matic (but you CANNOT get 4Matic w/the Bluetec -- only rear wheel drive).
Diesel engines typically outlast standard gas engines if that's important to you.

Someone posted that an S350 would be available in December? That's the first I've ever heard of that, but it would be very welcome seeing another S class diesel. Too bad the 350 is slower than the 320 version....

I was going by post #10 in this thread that said an S class diesel was going to be available in December. Not sure if it's even correct, but it would be very welcome. I doubt it though because it looks like they have gone they hybrid route.

I think they should have invested more in diesels for the US market, instead of recently going the hybrid route.
According to the news articles I've read, the S350 bluetec will launch in the US in the first quarter of 2011 and will only be available in AWD form (4matic).
37 mpg is projected, not sure how (typo?). 26-28 mpg would be more in line with the s-class body & 4matic I'd think.

The only way I could see that sort of mileage is that if they took the present hybrid and replaced the gas engine with a diesel engine and made it a diesel hybrid. I would not be interested in that - I really am not a fan of battery packs, the complexity and replacement cost.
That would be a shame because I think they would not see very good sales and they might interpret that as a failure of diesel rather than a failure of hybrids. I don't think the present hybrid is setting the world on fire as far as sales goes.

I would be reluctant to have Bridgestone RFTs on any car of mine.
It is certainly true that the ride with some of the 1st or 2nd generation of RFTs was harsh over broken pavement. However, the latest run flats from Michelin (on my present 335d) or Goodyear are much improved.
Yes, they do cost more to replace, but they offer a significant safety advantage over conventional tires. Let's say the difference in price might be $400 per set of four. In my view, that's a small price to pay for a potential life saving feature.

thanks for the RFT info. What is it about the Brigestone that bothers you and that I should be concerned about? I know Mercedes uses Brigestone on some models.

I have read that from July onward, MB will be fitting the new Michelin Primacy MXM4 all season to E350 and E550. This new tire, partly made from sun flower oil, will offer substantial performance advantages over the Continental Conti ProContacts. I do not know if there will be a run flat version of this tire offered for the E350 Bluetec.

Run flat tires on E350 Blutec
After reading the above posts regarding run flat tires, I am wondering what the car will be delivered with. What, exactly, does one do if a flat happens seeing as there is no spare.
Does MB offer any kind of insurance, etc? for such an event?

Hmmm ~ if the car was built on July 14th, and the MSRP invoice sent, I am wondering how this 'delay' would affect my delivery seeing as it has already been built ... and probably shipped ???

Has it to do with the recent injector problems that have been affecting MB diesels (especially the 2.2L turbo and 3.0L turbo engines), widely reported on various MB sites in the UK, etc. The 2.2L engine has seen many injector "replacements", while the 3.0L V6 has seen many injector software "re-calibrations".
Can anyone with inside knowledge comment on this issue ?

I had taken this kit with me when I drove my previous E320 Bluetec from Vancouver to Santa Fe, NM and return. The kit was my Plan A in case of a flat tire; I did not want to rely on a donut (then supplied as a "spare") since such a tire is very limited by speed (50 mph) and distance (about 100 kms) for usage.
