AutoBild has a review up between the E350CDI and 530d. In the link provided, there are pictures and some discussion from BMW owners. There's also a link to the actual review for those that understand German.

I think it sucks that they picked the absolute ugliest E-Class there is to go up against the new 5. Seeing the pics of the E really make me think, "WTF was MB thinking?"

Yeah nice find, actually posted this in the 5'er Thread a bit earlier too. I think it's a fair pic comparo, the 5 is lacking its own M-Sport pack. The Benz is indeed puke Gold, but I don't think that's what's hurting it here really.
Personally think putting these cars together shows how much the F10 trumps the new E in almost every way, elegance, cleanliness, youth, aggression, interior, etc. etc.
The E looks pretty up-tight, boxy, and frumpy next to it, which is interesting as it's a much more over-styled and tried design.
Like I said in the other Thread, it's the E's front that IMO wins over the 5's, I'm not huge on the 212's cartoon-y-ish face but the F10's just isn't translating well on pics, too flat, kind of dull, and for some reason SUV-ish, however I think that's due to the grace that it lacks. We'll see how it looks in person, and I'm crossing my fingers that the M-Pack "fixes" that.

Man, after reading those comments on that Board one would think that they literally read all of my opinions toward the new E and re-hashed them. From the upsetting interior, to the exterior, to the way it compares to the new 5. Only difference is the poor W212 Board is stuck with me lingering around for a little bit since I happen to own an M-B myself.
Won't be much longer folks, as my attention will soon get more and more sucked in by the F10, I promise.
BTW, here is the Autobild Article translated (in massively broken english though):

yes thats right, and i can tell you why... I think it sucks that they picked the absolute ugliest E-Class there is to go up against the new 5.
because mercedes is selling waaaaaay more new E-Class models than Bmw at the moment... so the german magazines try to help bmw at the moment... but it's ok.. if a new merc is comming out they try to show the people that its better than every other car...

@ New BMW 5: I think it looks like a BMW 3 with steriods not ugly but definetly nothing new...
i wonder how bmw will selling the 5er in 4 years with a design that looks old at the beginning of the car history...Out Of Control!!
M-B better hope their brand new E-Class is selling a ton better than the 7th and final year 5-Series. Plus the E60 is butt ugly, so no doubt that is further reason why the E should be trumping it. The F10 VS W212 is a more fair "Sales" comparo to be fair, although I don't think mass Sales should determine much to us enthusiasts, a bit of course, but not an "end-all-be-all" factor.
Out Of Control!!
Also, just to add, in the U.S, the final year E60 sold very very close to the brand newly launched E-Class in November, as in, around a few hundred or so less units. Not great news for the E-Class, especially since Sales are almost always highest and most positive for cars during their first months/year of introduction. For some reason, the hideous E60 has been such a strong seller in the U.S, pretty pathetic. I was at the car show tonight, and man is that E60 showing its age, a frills-full design like it usually does.

looks like they picked a 212 with 15" rims on it!!! there's also the reality that the 212 looks much better in person than on paper/screen.

Totally agree..

Personally I'm not focusing on the rims, just the shape of the cars, I personally don't think the rims are a make or breaker in the photo comparo.
W212 comes across to me well in Photo's, however to be fair, Editors have been saying you have to see the F10 in person to really get the impact of the look. So we'll see.
My biggest thing I hope they do away with is that "bloated" look of the Bangle era, if this thing looks lean, it'll be a winner. That's one thing M-B almost always gets right, they know how to make cars look "lean", the new gen has taken more BMW influence, and are a bit chunkier, but even the 212, which I initially thought was gonna look fat in person, looks pretty lean, considering it's a blocky design designed to come across as relatively "big". I credit it due mostly to the body sculpting, etc.

At least I can provide thought and out intelligent/objective opinions here, fanboys won't like it, I get that.
As well, please don't Reply to my comments. You provide no substance, just bratty rants.
I love the looks of both cars but the W212 in person is jaw dropping IMO. Those pics definitely don't do the merc any justice, especially with those 16'' granny rims and tires. Imagine the BMW with those on it, lol. Anyway I'm hard pressed and seeing the F10 5 as a new model. I need to see it next to the old one to see the differences I guess.

Pic of the F10 with ugly little rims:

Here's a comparo of the new VS old, pretty big difference when you see 'em together:

The E34 looks hot in that pic BTW ^^

I don't know the model #, but I still think the 3rd design from the right is still the best 5 series! Put a nice set of staggered rims on that car and it just looks chiseled.

Absolutely! The E39 5-Series is like one of the most widely respected German Sedans of all time. Considering it's a 90's design, most of which have shown their age years upon years ago, it is one of BMW's most timeless, if not their most timeless design ever IMO. I've seen some cherry E39 M5's driving around and they're stunning. Much nicer than the most recent 5 (Bangle-ized E60), which ironically, with its more outward and gimmicky look, is already looking dated big time IMO.
F10 Enthusiasts like to assume the F10 is truly an evolution of the E39 more-so than the E60.

E39 FTW. The most sought after M5 to this day.

I had 2 of them, which I leased 6 years and that was the best car I ever had in my life.....my 3 E classes after those cars ( W211 and W212 ) don't come close to that driving pleasure I had with E39. I think current 5 series is the best favor that BMW did for MB. I know many people who switched to MB because of ugly 5 series design.Originally Posted by K-A

Nice. It's funny, so many people have said that same thing (about the 5'er being the best they've ever had). I've even seen on peoples Sigs here on MBWorld, who own E55's, etc., who have some special message beside their E39, noting it as their fav, etc.Originally Posted by aeggroup

My Mom had one when I was younger, I used to take it out every now and then, so elegant, so smooth, sporty, etc. The E60 just lost lots of that (she bought an E60 after, drove a lot of that when I was in between cars). I think BMW made a mistake by taking an axe to the theme of the E39 with the E60, and now they're trying to get it back with the F10, we'll see if they can pull it off.
.... Actually, now that I think about it, right after her E39 and before her E60, she got the "new" W211 E320 (Base), I remember thinking it looked nice, but after driving it a couple of times, didn't give me the driving pleasure of the E39.
I've lusted after buying an F.L 530i Sport for a DD, or better yet, an M5 for so long, maintenance and Reliability issues are what are keeping me away.

Lol. I can understand how any intuitive person could figure that. If you knew me it would make more sense, in regards to understanding the assumption really isn't the case.Originally Posted by DHI

A Member had a wager going on if I remember correctly, though, regarding whether I'll be buying a W212 in the next year or so.... Maybe you should get in on that.

For me reliability is not so important because I'm leasing and whatever is wrong with a car - I go to their service and this is their headache, not mine. But what I care - I need to like design of my car..it has to be ...sexy... and I could not say that with E60 5 series ... It is ugly outside and cheap inside ..at least for me....

Agreed. When I was shopping for my 211, I was driving an '08 525i around, and had a slew of BMW friends around trying to get me to buy one for myself, not even an option for me, it was all about getting into another Benz. The E VS E60 5'er comparo for this recent generation wasn't even a question for me.Originally Posted by aeggroup

F10's looking good on paper so far, I'm hoping it gives me that "E39" feeling.
Leasing really saves from lots of headaches. My car is bought, and with an extended CPO Warranty, which is really great as even if something goes wrong, just take it in, get treated with good service, and get a Loaner. However it does get tiresome if you have to take your car in a lot. Once my Warranty runs out, if I still have my car, I'll have some thinking to do....
Good find 220s. Signed up to drive a 335i Coupe.

....Now that I think about it I dunno why I didn't choose a 7-Series.
