Rearview camera overlay?

Rearview camera overlay?
I noticed on the MBUSA site ML options pop-up descriptions that the rearview camera included an overlay showing where the vehicle will end up with current steering inputs. I first saw this in Japan on a Toyota minivan in 1995. I don't remember seeing the overlay on the 2010 E350. Can someone confirm?

My 2010 E does not have this however my 2010 ML550 does have it. Would be nice to have on the E also. Do not understand the inconsistancies between models with various features. Perhaps one hand does not know what the other is doing?

EPC shows MY08-10 ML incorporates control module (modulator) and camera, MY10 E is fitted with camera only.

I was speaking of my 2010 ML not an 08. I assume that its this modulator that gives you the lines on the picture?? Why did they elect not to put this in the E?? I fine it quite helpful in my ML.

I've got those dynamic lines on the 221 but this was discontinued from the 221 too, later models should have fixed lines only (aren't fixed lines even more confusing than no lines at all?). The expensive control unit for rear view camera was discontinued at some point and the Comand head unit took the task to draw the lines. Should not have been too difficult to feed the steering angle sensor info to Comand and make Comand draw dynamic lines.

The command actually already has access to the steering angle data. The reason that I heard for discontinuing the moving lines is that the majority of owners either hated it, didnt trust it, or had no idea how to use it... It was also expensive to implement as a separate module.

allegedly caused by owners following the lines and not looking where they were
going. But who knows what really lurks in the MB minds
BTW - I loved the guide - lines...

The majority hated it? I would assume a poll at the forum would give different results. In any case, why not a menu setting to switch them off only for those who cannot follow the dynamic lines (I guess that was humiliating for some and they wanted to get rid of the lines ).
There is always a difference between actual use and what a poll will indicate: e.g. I agree that if we poll the forum here for example, most members would indicate that the lines are a pretty cool feature and that they would want to have them even if the overall vehicle cost was a bit higher. MB's voc (voice of consumer) polls indicate the same things but when the actually monitor how people use the vehicle they find that they still are turning their head and looking out the rear window just as they had been doing their whole lives...
Incidentaly, whenever i am backing out an S I find myself doing the same thing: looking out the back instead of using the lines; i know that they work and that as long as nothing in the screen touches the lines it cant hit the vehicle but its difficult to change the way i have been backing up vehicles for the past 25 years...

If they were removed due to litigation then why did they include them on my 2010 ML550?? I too would like to see them on my E and was surprised they were not there. I find them quite handy

I admit I don't use those dynamic lines often if at all but it would not harm if they came for free (implemented by SW at the Comand head unit those would not add cost).

My guess is the static lines are the way MB is going. The dynamic lines of the S-Class were only around for a year or so and they went away. At the same time, they added parking guidance as a feature on top of distronic. Since then, the parking guidance feature has been paired with parktronic so they are available this way for MY10 on the E and the S. I think they probably got rid of the dynamic lines as they would have had conflicting systems if a car had both the dynamic lines and also the parking guidance function. Cost, as mentioned previously, was also likely a factor. I bet the static lines show up next model year perhaps. Personally, I think the static lines are really helpful when backing as it provides some indication of the width of the car in relation to the camera view.

Two things my wife's 2010 ML350 has that I thought would be on my 2010 E550
1. Lines on the back-up camera
2. Power fold side mirrors
Disappointed but oh well

I was in a new x5 that had them a few days ago. Very nice feature I wish we had. Does anyone know if you can have the module installed aftermarket?
