Fuel Filler Flap problems

Anyone having issues with the fuel filler flap (door)? Person filling fuel somewhere must have to forcibly pry the flap open. Now it doesn't seem to close properly and looks slightly ajar when closed. Anyone having this issue?

I had the same issue of the flap not opening. I stood there at the gas pump prying on it to the point that I was afraid I'd break it. Then my wife came out from inside the station and I unlocked the car for her. Presto, the flap opened as normal. I felt silly.

So I figure the car has to be unlocked in order for the flap to open normally. That might the problem.

Are you referring to the fuel flap or the doors?

Yeah, my first post was referring to when I had a similar problem with the fuel flap not opening. It was because my car was locked. Once I unlocked the car, the flap opened normally (push on the flap and it pops out to be pulled open).

Yes! This is my issue too. Flap door seems misaligned and door will sometimes not close properly. Any followup?

BTW, this is NOT due to the car being locked. The car is most definitely UNLOCKED.

You may not like this solution, but this is how I fixed my problem. The fuel flap is actually just plastic painted over with the exterior color. Mine appeared ajar (doors unlocked) and was misaligned. I slid it out of the housing that holds it, bent it a little by hand (too much force and you risk breaking the plastic), slid it back in to check for closure and applied some epoxy glue. Works well now and is no longer misaligned. when you lock/unlock the doors, there is a "pin" that moves up/down to also lock/unlock the flap. Other option is to take it to the dealer and have them fix it.

I've noticed some weird fitment of Gas Filler caps with some 212's I've seen. Even remembered this picture with a funky cap on a Wagon. I credited it to perhaps being due to all the sheetmetal work going on in that area, perhaps it'd be hard to get a cap to fit totally "flat". Then again, I have seen 'em with normal fitted caps, so..
